Winter Knights of the Round Table Algoa 108 take to the road in warming drive

15 June 2023 By Alan Straton

Look out for the Round Table Algoa 108 truck on Thursday, 15th June 2023, as it makes its way through Gqeberha, handing out warm winter clothes and bedding to the homeless. The distribution drive is the result of a collaboration between Round Table Algoa 108, Algoa Toyota and Herbert Hurd Primary School, which has raised approximately R40 000 worth of clothing, blankets, food and sanitary pads.

“Our annual Winter Knights drive kicks into high gear on Thursday when we distribute all the donated goods, which will include a hot meal, from 20:30,” says Shane Tait, Round Table Algoa 108 Winter Knights convenor. “Round Table is a young men's organisation which runs projects to assist local communities, and Winter Knights is one of our headline events for Round Table Southern Africa, bringing a bit of relief to some of our homeless.”

One of the fundraising events which contributed to this distribution drive was a “speedo braai night” held on the 20 th of May which saw all 108 members of Round Table braai for the public at their clubhouse in situated in Fernglen, encouraging their supporters to drop off donations.

“Our Round Table members & families will travel along Cape Road towards Central, and will stop wherever we find homeless people in need,” says Tait. “Each will be given clothing, a blanket and a hot bowl of samp and beans. As a volunteering organisation we try to make a small difference in the lives of the vulnerable.”

Other beneficiaries of the Round Table Algoa 108 efforts include the MTR Smit Children's Haven, the Twinkle Twinkle Little Star children's care home, Hannah's Arm's safety and foster care for babies and the Quadriplegic Association of the Eastern Cape.
