
He was speaking at the annual awards ceremony which honours players, cricket officials, volunteers and clubs across the province.
In the national tournament the Warriors came close to winning the CSA T20 Challenge, losing by just 11 runs to Lions.
David Masterson was named “best batsman” in the Premier League for 2019. Masterson was earlier given the player of they year award by the Madibaz Cricket Club.
Eastern Province Women’s Player of the Year is Lanette Pienaar.
Club of the year went to Gelvandale Cricket Club.
Eastern province provincial also shared the 4-Day national provincial Title with the Multiply Titans in April.
“These achievements are good news for cricket in the Eastern Cape, as it helps build interest in the game and confidence in the management of the clubs and teams from school level through to the Warriors,” he says.
The 2019 Eastern Province School Team of the Year is the T20 winners St Andrews College, and the EP Youth Team of the Year is the under 19 boys.
Special accolades this year were the Presidential Award presented to Malcolm Roberts the school cricket chairperson for his outstanding achievements over a period of 30 years in school cricket.
The Cricket Services Award was presented to Gugu Ndulama, the KFC Mini-Cricket coordinator for the Eastern Cape.
“There was a total of 63 awards, which shows the depth of cricket in the province. The foundation is there to do even better next year”.
“Awards evenings are meant for two things,” says Colin Gxowa cricket services manager at EP Cricket comment.
“One is to acknowledge and appreciate the hard work that the individuals and teams have put together via their performances.
“Secondly, they are meant to showcase the talent that we have in the pipeline of the province.
“It was important for us to thank the hard work our guys have contributed at school, HUB/RPC, Club and Provincial level”.
“Cricket South Africa has confirmed that the EP Cricket Board is now firmly in control of its finances and that we are meeting all our commitments in terms of cricket development.
“So much so that they have allowed EPC to build up a reserve, while we have been able to finance the upgrades to St Georges Park which have brought it back to its rightful place as one of the best stadiums in the southern hemisphere,” adds May.
“On the field, the results speak for themselves. Players who have made it into the Proteas side in recent months include Lutho Sipamla, Christiaan Jonker, Lutho Sipamla and Anrich Nortje.
“Clearly, we are succeeding in raising up cricket stars from all communities,” he says. This year we have contracted 20 players from our club system to the Eastern Province Provincial squad.
“We are looking forward to the new season with a more aggressive approach was we gear ourselves up for the new 12 province cricket set up,” says May.
