Due to a number of problems being experienced at schools in the Eastern Cape, the Minister of Education Angie Motshekga and her Deputy Enver Surty are to travel to the province.
The pair will visit various schools on Wednesday and Thursday to assess the situation on the ground before meeting with the provincial education officials at the Council of Education Ministers on Friday.
The provincial education department has been experiencing a number of challenges regarding the termination of temporary teachers’ contracts, scholar transport and school nutrition programmes.
The Eastern Cape was the only province which did not have a relatively smooth start to the 2011 academic year last week.
Basic Education spokesperson, Dr Granville Whittle, said at the time that the province had failed to finalise a stationery tender and learning in 1 000 schools did not start because there was no stationery and textbooks. He said the problem would only be sorted out by the end of the month.
Motshekga will, during her fact finding mission, meet with the Premier of the Eastern Cape, the Provincial Director-General as well as the MEC for Education and his top management to assess the extent of the challenges, and how the ministry can provide support to the province.
The minister will outline her findings and interventions during the Council of Education Ministers meeting. – BuaNews
