Why Is Month-End Still a Fire Drill?

22 July 2026 By Alan Straton

Sandton: Every month it happens again.

Finance teams stay late. Managers wait for reports. Someone discovers a broken formula. Another employee is reconciling figures from multiple spreadsheets while executives delay important decisions because they are still waiting for trusted information.

Month-end has become a fire drill.

The surprising part is that most organisations believe this is simply part of running a business.

It isn’t.

In many organisations, the real problem is not the finance team, Microsoft Excel or the accounting system. It is years of manual workarounds, duplicated processes and reporting workflows that have gradually become more complicated over time.

“Most organisations don’t need their finance teams to work harder,” says Arnold Muscat, Director of College Africa Group. “They need to remove the repetitive work that turns every month-end into unnecessary pressure.”

Before implementing new technology, organisations should first understand how information moves through the business. An AI Workflow Discovery identifies manual processes, duplicated effort and reporting bottlenecks that consume valuable time and increase business risk.

Once these workflows have been reviewed, organisations can determine where AI Consulting, Advanced Excel, Microsoft 365, ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot can automate repetitive reporting tasks, improve collaboration and reduce manual reconciliation while maintaining appropriate human validation.

Technology alone will not eliminate month-end pressure.

The greatest improvements come from combining better business processes, stronger workplace skills and practical AI adoption to create reporting workflows that are faster, more accurate and easier to manage.

When finance professionals spend less time chasing numbers and more time analysing them, executives receive trusted information sooner, decisions improve and month-end becomes a controlled business process instead of a recurring crisis.

Perhaps the better question isn’t why month-end feels like a fire drill.

It’s why your organisation still accepts it as normal.
