Who will be the East Cape’s best?

The Eastern Cape Department of Human Settlements will on Thursday recognise the best performing contractors, housing projects and municipalities in the delivery of houses for the 2014/15 financial year.

The contractors will be recognised during the provincial annual Govan Mbeki Awards to be held at Rucc Ministries in Southernwood.

The department will use the awards to honour anti-apartheid and freedom fighter, Govan Mbeki, also known as “Oom Gov” based on the principles of the Home of the Legends campaign adopted by Eastern Cape Provincial Government, which recognises the immense role played by the likes of the late Oom Gov.

Department spokesperson Lwandile Sicwetsha said the purpose of the award is to showcase work done by the department with special emphasis on its programmes that promote best practise in the delivery of the core mandate – including outcome 8 deliverables (Accelerating Housing Opportunities, Access to basic services, Improve Property Market, Efficient Utilisation of State Land).

“The purpose of the awards is to promote and inculcate a culture of excellence within the Human Settlement sector in the delivery of quality human settlements and dignity to South Africans.

“The awards encourage all stakeholders in the sector to respond systematically and foster the entrenchment of spatial patterns across all geographic scales that exacerbate social inequality and economic efficiency,” Sicwetsha said. – SAnews.gov.za
