When crime does not pay

Swift action and excellent communication led to the speedy arrests of four robbery suspects in Port Elizabeth on Thursday. The suspects aged between 18 and 27 were arrested twenty minutes after the crime was committed.

It is alleged that on Thursday, 27 October 2016, a 22-year-old woman was travelling to the Greenacres taxi rank to board a bus to East London. The complainant took out her cell phone to contact her mother when she was threatened by the four suspects in a maroon coloured Siyaya minibus. The suspects took her phone, wallet and cellphone charger. The victim was dropped her off in Conyngham Road and as the suspects drove off she took down the registration number.

The complainant stopped a passing police vehicle and provided the officer with the information, which was immediately circulated via radio control.  Not long after the vehicle was circulated the Crime Combatting Unit members on duty spotted the taxi in Castle Hill Street in Central and arrested the four suspects.  The stolen property was recovered.

The four suspects were detained on charges of robbery and possession of suspected stolen goods and will appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate court on Monday 31 October 2016. One suspect is wanted on several cases by police (murder in Bethelsdorp in 2009, theft of motor vehicle in Gelvandale in 2014 and possession of suspected stolen property in Molteno in 2014).
