What Your Urine Colour Says About Your Health

26 August 2026 By Alan Straton

Table of Contents

Affinity Health, a leading provider of high-quality health cover, is educating the public about what different urine colours may indicate and when a colour change could warrant medical attention.

While it may not be something most people like to discuss, the colour of your urine can provide valuable clues about your hydration levels, diet, medication use, and even potential underlying health conditions. Although many colour changes are harmless and temporary, others may indicate that your body needs medical attention.

Healthy urine is usually pale yellow to light straw in colour. This shade comes from a pigment called urochrome, which is produced when the body breaks down old red blood cells. The more water you drink, the more diluted this pigment becomes. The less you drink, the darker your urine may appear.

Clear Urine

Clear urine often means you are well hydrated. However, if your urine is consistently colourless and you are drinking excessive amounts of water, it may be a sign of overhydration. Too much water can dilute essential minerals in the body and, in rare cases, lead to symptoms such as headaches, nausea, confusion, and weakness.

Pale Yellow Urine

Pale yellow urine is generally considered the ideal colour and is a sign that your body is properly hydrated. It usually indicates that your kidneys are functioning normally and efficiently removing waste products from the body.

Dark Yellow or Amber Urine

Dark yellow or amber urine is often one of the earliest signs of dehydration. This can occur after exercise, during hot weather, or when you have been ill with vomiting or diarrhoea. Increasing your fluid intake will usually return your urine to a lighter colour.

However, persistent dark urine despite adequate hydration should not be ignored, as it may signal an underlying health condition.

Orange Urine

Orange urine can sometimes result from dehydration, vitamin supplements, or certain medications. In some cases, however, it may indicate liver or bile duct problems, particularly if accompanied by symptoms such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, abdominal discomfort, or pale stools.

Pink or Red Urine

Pink or red urine can be alarming, but it is not always caused by blood. Foods such as beetroot, blackberries, and rhubarb can temporarily change the colour of your urine.

If food is not the cause, however, then blood may be present in the urine. This can be linked to urinary tract infections, kidney stones, kidney disease, prostate conditions, or bladder disorders. Any unexplained red or pink urine should be assessed by a healthcare professional.

Brown or Tea-Coloured Urine

Brown urine may occur due to severe dehydration, certain medications, or specific foods. It can also be associated with liver disease, muscle injury, or the presence of blood in the urine. Medical advice should be sought if brown urine persists or occurs alongside other symptoms.

Cloudy or Milky Urine

Cloudy urine is commonly associated with urinary tract infections, particularly when accompanied by a burning sensation, frequent urination, pelvic pain, or fever. It may also be linked to kidney stones or excess protein in the urine.

Foamy Urine

Occasional bubbles in the toilet are usually harmless. However, persistently foamy or frothy urine may indicate excess protein in the urine, which can be a sign that the kidneys are not filtering waste properly. This is particularly important to investigate if swelling is also present in the feet, ankles, hands, or face.

Green or Blue Urine

Green or blue urine is uncommon and is most often caused by food colouring, supplements, or medications. Although rare, it can sometimes be linked to infections or metabolic conditions. Persistent colour changes should be discussed with a healthcare professional.

When Should You See a Doctor?

While urine colour changes are often harmless, you should seek medical advice if you experience:

  • Blood in your urine.
  • Pain or burning when urinating.
  • Fever or chills.
  • Persistent dark, brown, or orange urine.
  • Swelling in the body.
  • Changes in urination frequency.
  • Severe thirst or signs of dehydration.
  • Back or kidney pain.

Conclusion

Your urine can reveal a surprising amount about your overall health. Paying attention to changes in colour, especially when they occur alongside other symptoms, can help identify health concerns early and improve treatment outcomes.
