Last night the Longhair and I toodled on down to the Boardwalk to see the Sparkle for Charity and Laser show.
Of course the Longhair met her good friend and ace photographer, Niki M, there so I was kinda lost for the evening. No matter – it was a good chance to practise some night shooting of the world record sparkler attempt which was followed by the laser and pyrotechnic show. Some of the ‘publishable’ images are to be found below.
Two Christmas seasons back the Boardwalk had a plastic ice skating rink in the old Chinese Quarter which we took the Cape Town famiglia to – it wasn’t quite the success that we hoped for, though.
This year the Boardwalk have upped their game somewhat and have brought a genuine 340 square meter mobile ice rink with real ice, to Port Elizabeth.
The glass-sided rink will be open every day from Sunday, 4 December to 15 January and, for complete novices and anyone unsteady on their skates, the special ‘Ice Angel’ marshalls will be available to lend an expert helping hand.
For smaller visitors, the special Bobby the Seal skate-aid will assist them to navigate around the ice in safety. The rounded seal is slipped over the child and the seal ‘tail’ can be pushed by an adult.
Ice-World has a capacity for 120 people on the ice. Tickets are available from Computicket at R50 per hourly session, including the hire of ice skates, or they can be bought at the entrance to the rink.
After the pyrotechnics last night we popped over to see if the ice was skateable and to inspect the venue – in comparison to the last ‘plastic’ ice rink this one is streets ahead in organisation and facilities. It looks like the Boardwalk may have a winner here.
And, for the environmentally conscious, I am told that Ice-World International creates the world’s most advanced, energy efficient, mobile ice-rinks and that the special design features enable Ice-World rinks to be 40% more energy-efficient than other similar rinks.
