1. Community Braai – 18 October 2013
A very successful community braai was held at the Voortrekker Hall, Sunridge Park on 18 October 2013 by the Baakens Valley Preservation Trust for the residents and everybody else who helped during the recent bush fires in Fernglen and Sunridge Park.
Tables and chairs were supplied and the fires were ready when we arrived.
A special thanks to Gwynneth Marmetschke and Ross Zietsman of the Baakens Valley Preservation Trust for organizing this informal function. Gwynneth would also like to share the following with our residents:
“…We have a very special and unique place here in Port Elizabeth, the Baakens River Valley. Twenty five years ago concerned people formed the Trust as an environmental NGO to promote conservation and the wise use of the valley.
The Trust has achieved much in working with the Municipality and others, but the need for an effective conservation organization to secure and rehabilitate this natural area is greater now than ever before.
Please join the Baakens Valley Preservation Trust to provide support for the conserving of the Valley…”

It was with a sense of sadness we heard the news that former state president, Nelson Mandela, passed away on 5 December 2013. Many memorial services were held for him throughout the country.
3. Voter registration Campaigns during November 2013
Some feedback on the voter registration drive of 9 & 10 November 2013: It was by all means a huge success. Thank you to everybody who came out to re-register and/or just to check whether they are registered.
A special thanks to all the residents who helped at the different voting stations. Should you be willing to assist in the 2014 Elections, please do not hesitate to contact my office on 041-360 0447.
Please take note that voter registration is an ongoing process until the election date is formally declared next year. Thus, should you not have registered during the abovementioned weekend, you can visit the IEC
office at 122 Cape Road, Mill Park to register.
Another registration weekend for the different wards throughout the Metro has been scheduled for the weekend of 8 & 9 February 2014 for the residents who have not registered yet to vote and those who have moved since the previous election.
4. NEWS FROM THE DA
Key Provincial By-Elections are an important precursor for 2014 General Election
The following message was received from Mr Athol Trollip, DA Legislature Leader:
“… The recent Ward 5 by-election in the Nelson Mandela Metro, which was caused by the resignation of DA councillor Jeremy Davis, was an important bellwether election to determine whether the DA support in the Metro is still on an upward curve.
The wonderful election fought by Councillor Morné Steyn with his magnificent campaign team led by David Hayselden and Bobby Stevenson indicates that the DA is regarded as a realistic alternative to the floundering ANC in the Nelson Mandela Metro.
In the 2011 local government elections the DA achieved 86% and the ANC 12%. In the elections of 23 Oct 2013 the DA achieved fractionally under 95% with the ANC scratching a meagre 4% together…”
