ELECTION DATE

Please take note that Wednesday, 18 May 2011 has been gazetted as the election date. Let us make our vote count for a better Metro!

NEWS FROM THE METRO

DA successful in stopping the Metro from spending hard-earned money of NMMM’s ratepayers

We’ve received the following press release from the Speaker:

“…As Speaker of the NMBMM Council, I have taken note of the NMBMM Administration, public media and other interests’ views and concerns raised over the Recommendations contained in the Report on election funding. I am taking this unprecedented step, as Speaker of the NMBMM Council, to issue a public statement in order to clarify the status of the said Report and its Recommendations.

Further, as Council and Speaker of the NMBMM Council, we are alarmed that the said Report’s Recommendations, well intentioned as they might have been to contribute to establishing a climate conducive to free and fair elections, risks being hijacked and abused for all sorts of purposes including electioneering.

The following is the position with regards to the said Report’s Recommendations:

  • I am aware and have been advised that the Executive Mayor of the Metro has actively consulted other spheres of government over this matter.
  • It is in the best interest of Council not to proceed to effect the Recommendations. I have been assured by both the Executive Mayor and the Acting Municipal Manager of the NMBMM that they will not act to effect the Recommendations of the said Report.
  • I thus want to assure the people of the NMBMM that no Council moneys will thus be used…”

In response to this correspondence Mr Leon de Villiers, DA Caucus Leader and DA Mayoral Candidate, responded as follows:

“…The DA welcomes the assurance from the Speaker that the Executive Mayor and the Acting Municipal Manager of the NMBM will not be implementing the illegal resolutions that were dealt with at the Council meeting on 24 February 2011.

The R10m that the Executive Mayor wanted to spend on what was effectively an ANC election campaign can now be used for much needed service delivery, such as to promote the metro so we can create jobs, repair and construct roads and deliver houses…”

THIS SHOULD BE ONE OF THE REASONS TO VOTE ON 18 MAY 2011!!!!!!!!

APPLICATIONS FOR SUBDIVISION

I have received applications for subdivisions of the following erven:

  • Subdivision 7162: Erf 928 (Great West Way, Framesby) and
  • Subdivision 7166: Erf 923 (Great West Way, Framesby).

The applications may be examined at the office of the Properties and Planning Administration, 2nd floor, Govan Mbeki Avenue, Brister House, during normal office hours.

The proposals will only be considered by Council once the legal requirements have been completed so that any possible objection may also be taken into account.

Should you have any objections, please forward them to Land Planning and Management Sub-Directorate, Att.: Ms L Sali, P O Box 9, Port Elizabeth, 6000 or lsali@mandelametro.gov.za before 11 April 2011.

  • On 03 February 2011 between 16:30 and 21:00, One Hundred and Forty One (141) motorists were measured. The highest speed of 61 km/h was recorded. No motorist was prosecuted for exceeding the speed limit of 60 km/h.

We also received the following feedback on law enforcement conducted in Aster Avenue, Sunridge Park:

  • On 23 February 2011 between 06:00 and 18:00, One Hundred and Ninety (190) vehicles was measured. The highest speed of 75 km/h was recorded. One (1) motorist was prosecuted for exceeding the speed limit of 60 km/h.

N2 BRIDGE FROM FRAMESBY TO WESTERING

After numerous queries, I can report back that SANRAL have appointed a contractor who has finally started with the reparation of the bridge over the N2 from Framesby to Westering. The work will include the demolition and replacement of the damaged pier (northern side of the road) as well as minor works which will include repairs to the deck and handrails.

SHOCKING STATE OF WARD 9

After once again receiving numerous complaints re the shocking state of Ward 9, I have directed the following e-mail to the Metro and was informed that they will be investigating and giving feedback as a matter of urgency:

“…I am receiving daily complaints from the residents in Ward 9 (comprising Linton Grange, Westering, Framesby, Sunridge Park and Fernglen) pertaining to the open spaces, parks and grass not being cut in the metro and specifically our ward.

The open spaces are in a disgusting state and are becoming health hazards as more residents are finding mice, rats and snakes in their erven as well as  fire hazards due to the length of the grass/bushes and the current drought we are experiencing.  Many residents (including school children and domestic workers) use these areas as thoroughfare to and from their homes/schools on a daily basis.

I would also like to know why the grass has been cut and parks cleaned in certain wards only (e.g. Summerstrand area)?  Kindly advise when will the grass be cut and open parks be cleaned in Ward 9.

I urge you to look into this matter immediately and expect an answer soonest because the mayor advise at our last Council meeting that the officials must not blame the budget cuts for not doing their work (service delivery to ALL ratepayers).

Please furnish me with an action plan to address the abovementioned concerns…”

Response received from the Metro:

“… We are already busy processing the order for this work to be done. The mowing of areas will be done between the last week of this month and the second week of April…”

I will keep you up to date.

LINTON GRANGE LIBRARY BOOK SALE

Please take note: the friends of the Linton Grange Library will have a book sale on 9 April 2011 at the library.

LONDT PARK SPORTS CLUB EVENT

I have been informed by the Londt Park Sports Club that: “… on the weekend of 31 March, 1 & 2 April 2011, the National Golden Oldies Tournament will be hosted on the grounds of Londt Park. We have teams from all over South Africa coming and also some national artists.

We plead for your patience and tolerance for this weekend. There is provision for 500 cars on the premises, controlled gate by Security and SA Police roaming. We invite you to the clubhouse to see the programme. Should you have queries, please call: André Gerber on 079 490 0528 or Ronnie Hall on 083 573 6551.

I had a meeting with all the roleplayers involved at the Metro’s offices during the week and voiced my concerns (noise, traffic, compliance with the by-laws, etc.). I will keep you up to date should I receive any further information.
