www.MyPE.co.za: From the Atlas Security Crime Newsletter we have picked out a couple of interesting crime incidents:
A business owner in Sixth Avenue, Walmer was attacked by two unknown suspects while he was locking up his business at 19h04 on Wednesday evening.
The owner’s mother phoned ATLAS reporting that her son contacted her and said that he was attacked and almost hijacked. A Response Team and the Police were dispatched to the business to investigate.
They found the owner on site, in a state of shock. He reported that after he locked up and walked to his vehicle, a young male approached him. As the man came closer, he noticed a second suspect coming towards him. The suspects fought with the owner and intended to injure him and hijack his vehicle. The criminals decided to run off after the owner put up a fight and did not get away with any valuables.
After the incident, he contacted his family, who alerted ATLAS to the incident.
Thief caught red-handed
Alert Response Officers caught and arrested a burglar with stolen goods in Doorley Street, Colleen Glen at 14h00 on Tuesday this week.
The Response Officers noticed the criminal walking with a flat screen computer monitor and a DVD player. They immediately suspected that the goods may be stolen and stopped the suspect. He denied that they were stolen goods and tried to flee the scene.
After a short while, the suspect confessed to breaking into a house and stealing the DVD player and computer monitor. The Response Officers detained the suspect until the owner of the burgled residence and the Police arrived. They also found that the suspect had stolen a plasma screen TV that he hid near the fence.
The criminal was arrested and the Police are investigating a case of housebreaking.
Two hijacking suspects arrested
ATLAS and the Police managed to arrest two criminals who were involved in a hijacking at 02h43 on Saturday.
The incident took place in Willow Road, Lorraine when fives criminals hijacked the occupants at gunpoint. The Response Officers and the Police joined forces and managed to arrest two of the gang in Overbaakens. The other three suspects fled in the direction of Schauderville and the Police gave chase.
The Police are investigating a case of hijacking and hope to make more arrests soon.
Homeowners interrupt midnight burglars
Burglars were scared off by the homeowners when they broke into a house in Second Avenue, Summerstrand during the early hours of the morning on Thursday last week.
The homeowners were woken by a noise during the night, but after investigating, found no sign of burglary. They went back to sleep and later contacted ATLAS at 08h56, reporting that they had indeed been burgled during the early hours of the morning. They noticed that their laptop was unplugged and ready to be taken.
The Response Officers inspected the property and found that the study window was forced open and entry was gained. The owners suspect that when they woke during the night, they must have interrupted the burglars while they were stealing the laptop. The criminals fled without taking anything.
The owner opted not to open a case with the Police, as nothing was stolen.
Open balcony window a golden opportunity for burglars
Clever thieves gained access into a house in Bird Street, Central by climbing onto the balcony and then in through a window at 23h58 on Saturday.
The criminals climbed over the palisade fencing and jumped onto a vehicle parked under the balcony. They hoisted themselves onto the balcony and climbed through a window that had been left ajar. They helped themselves to a laptop, handbags, jewellery and an undisclosed amount of money.
The owners were inside the house at the time of the housebreaking and when they heard the criminals breaking in, they pressed their panic button.
The Response Officers arrived almost immediately and chased the fleeing suspects. Unfortunately no arrests were made, but the owner caught a glimpse of the suspects and gave a description to the Police to assist in their investigation.
A case of housebreaking was opened.
Criminals urinate inside Broadwood home and steal laptop
On arriving home, Tobias Crescent, Broadwood residents made the unpleasant discovery that their home had been burgled sometime during the day on Tuesday this week.
They immediately contacted ATLAS and requested a Response Officer to meet with them on site. It appeared that the criminals gained entry via an open window. A few windows were open and all the burglar bars were intact, so only small thieves could have climbed through. A laptop was stolen and they ransacked the room. They urinated on the bed, as well as in the owner’s underwear drawer.
The Response Officers had to attend to another emergency and confirmed that the Police were on site to investigate the incident.
Criminals kick down front door of Sidwell business
A Strang Street, Sidwell business’ front door was kicked down during a burglary at 01h17 on Saturday.
The Response Officers were dispatched when the alarm activated and upon their arrival they found the front door wide open.
The criminals had forced open the security gate and the front door. They gained entry into the reception area and stole three computer towers within a few minutes.
The Police arrived to investigate the incident.
Summerstrand tenant stabbed by house robber
A tenant in Rubin Crescent, Summerstrand was stabbed by armed robbers during an early morning house robbery on Saturday.
Criminals broke a window at 05h08 and gained entry into the tenant’s room. The tenant woke up and tried to chase them away, but did not succeed. One of the suspects drew a knife and stabbed the tenant in his neck. He fell down and the criminal grabbed his laptop and fled.
ATLAS was alerted and dispatched to the scene. The Officers received information that the victim had been stabbed and called the Police and an ambulance.
The tenant lost a lot of blood and was transported to hospital. The Police are investigating the incident.
Armed criminals rob Zwide business staff and customers
Employees and customers were robbed by three armed suspects inside a business in Njoli Square, Zwide at 18h28 on Saturday.
Armed robbers stormed into the shop and held the staff and customers at gunpoint. The men demanded the staff to hand over all the money in the shop, as well as their cell phones. The customers were also forced to hand over their cell phones and all their money. A male employee was shot in the arm during the robbery. After gathering their loot, the suspects fled the scene.
One of the employees pressed their panic button after the robbers left and an ATLAS Response Team was dispatched.
All the victims confirmed that they would open cases with the Police.

- 02:59 A business in Heugh Road, Walmer was burgled. The suspects smashed a window and cut the burglar bars.
- 03:27 A business in Heugh Road, Walmer was burgled. The side window was broken.
- 06:09 Thieves stole a light from a pillar at a residence in Gazania Avenue, Sunridge Park. They also damaged a section of the fence.
- 08:57 A business in Caseley Street, Korsten was burgled. The suspects made a few holes in the roof and gained entry.
- 11:30 A suspect was trespassing at a residence in Cumberland Street, Rowallan Park. The domestic worker reported that a suspect knocked on the window, then moved to the front door and refused to leave, but eventually did before the Response Officers arrived.
- 11:52 A residence in Groendal Road, Morningside was burgled. The suspects smashed a window and gained entry.
- 13:02 A business in Adam Street, Morningside had an attempted burglary. A section of the fence was removed.
- 14:00 ATLAS Response Officers caught a suspect in Doorley Street, Colleen Glen who was in possession of stolen goods. He broke into a house nearby and stole a flat screen monitor and a DVD player. He also stole a plasma screen TV and hid it near the fence. All the stolen goods were recovered.
- 15:04 A residence in Tobias Crescent, Broadwood was burgled. The criminals climbed through the burglar bars and gained entry. A laptop was stolen and the criminals urinated on the bed and in the owner’s underwear drawer.
- 19:01 A residence in Admiralty Way, Summerstrand was burgled. The criminals forced open one window but could not gain entry. They then broke another window and forced open the burglar bars to gain entry. The owner said that they would confirm their loss at a later stage.
- 19:32 A business in Jackson Street, Korsten was burgled. The criminals gained entry via the roof.
ON MONDAY 11 APRIL 2011:
- 08:56 A residence in Tulbagh Street, Kabega Park was burgled. The bottom part of the main bedroom window was smashed and entry was gained. The owner could not confirm their loss and would check later.
- 09:59 A premises in Uitenhage Road, Sydenham was burgled. The suspects forced open the bathroom window and gained entry. A sound system was stolen.
- 11:20 Thieves stole washing from a washing line in Pollock Street, Rowallan Park.
- 14:09 A residence in First Avenue, Newton Park had an attempted burglary. The criminals forced open the kitchen window.
- 16:00 A residence in Neville Street, Westering was burgled. Thieves broke into the wendy house.
ON SUNDAY 10 APRIL 2011:
- 03:41 People were fighting outside a business in Caledon Street, Uitenhage. The owner confirmed that the man who started the fighting sustained an injury to his head. The Police and an ambulance attended to the incident.
- 04:53 A premises in Glenroy Drive, Sherwood was burgled. The locks on the wendy house were cut and it appeared that vagrants had been sleeping in the wendy house.
- 09:27 A residence in Cawood Crescent, Vanes Estate (Uitenhage) was burgled. A window was smashed and the burglar bars were removed.
- 10:45 A business in Hart Street, Sidwell was burgled. The suspects gained entry by climbing into a tree and jumping over the fence. They lifted some of the roof sheeting and gained entry into the office. Copper and brass were stolen. The owner suspects that the dog was poisoned.
- 15:46 A business in Downing Street, North End was burgled. A window was broken.
- 18:53 Four suspects stole an iron grid from a business in Eveready Road, Sidwell. The thieves dropped the grid as they fled.
- 21:28 An intoxicated woman caused trouble at a business in Newton Street, Newton Park. The Police removed her from the site.
ON SATURDAY 09 APRIL 2011:
- 00:18 A business in Bruce Street, Newton Park had an attempted burglary. The owner reported that a suspect who arrived in a bakkie tried to break into the premises. The lock was cut but no entry was gained.
- 01:17 A business in Strang Street, Sidwell was burgled. The security gate was forced open and the door kicked in. Entry was gained and three computer towers were stolen.
- 02:43 ATLAS received information that people were hijacked and robbed in Willow Road, Lorraine. Apparently five suspects were involved in the robbery. The Police and Response Officers managed to arrest two suspects in Overbaakens.
- 05:08 A house robbery took place at a residence in Rubin Crescent, Summerstrand. A window of the tenant’s room was broken. The tenant saw the suspects and tried to chase them, but one of the criminals stabbed the tenant in the neck and stole his laptop. The Police and an ambulance attended to the incident.
- 09:42 A business in Paterson Road, North End was burgled. The gate was forced open and the criminals entered through the window. Three computers and three printer/copiers were stolen.
- 10:16 A roof burglary took place at a business in Paterson Road, North End. The suspects made four holes in the roof and gained entry. A computer tower and a monitor were stolen.
- 13:35 A security guard in Main Road, Walmer reported that suspects in a green VW Caddy stole a white Toyota Corolla the previous day. The criminals also tried to break into a white Isuzu bakkie.
- 14:16 A residence in Moregrove Road, Westering was burgled. The suspects removed the putty from the main bedroom window and removed the burglar bars. Entry was gained and a watch and alcohol were stolen.
- 18:28 An armed robbery took place at a business in Njoli Square, Zwide. Armed robbers entered the business and robbed two employees of two cell phones and an undisclosed amount of cash. They also robbed three customers of their cell phones and possessions. One of the employees was shot in the arm.
- 18:54 A domestic violence incident took place at a residence in Selbourne Road, Charlo. The owners were going through a divorce and the husband tried to break into the house.
- 19:40 A business owner in Cape Road, Newton Park reported that one of their drivers was under the influence. The Police attended to the incident.
- 23:58 A residence in Bird Street, Central was burgled. Suspects climbed over the palisade fencing and entered the yard. They then climbed onto a car and onto the balcony and entered through an open window. They took a laptop, handbags, jewellery and money.
ON FRIDAY 08 APRIL 2011:
- 07:22 A premises in College Drive, Mill Park was burgled. The suspects entered through the open bathroom window and forced open another door.
- 09:52 Two criminals tried to rob two women sitting in a vehicle parked in Grahamstown Road, Deal Party. The two suspects approached the vehicle, forced open the doors and tried to take the women’s handbags. The women screamed and the suspects fled. One of the suspects took a cell phone and hit one of the women in the face.
- 10:08 A business in Paterson Road, North End was burgled. The owner reported that their wiring was stolen.
- 14:37 A residence in La Roche Drive, Humewood was burgled. The back bedroom window was broken and the burglar bars were bent. Entry was gained.
- 21:06 A homeowner in Ben Fleur Avenue, Beverley Grove reported that he was assaulted by a man. The man and his ex-girlfriend were fighting and he was assaulting her. The Response Officers arrived and found the intoxicated man in a grey Toyota. He also tried to assault the Response Officers and then fled.
- 22:05 A domestic violence incident took place at a residence in Marcia Way, Providentia. The neighbour reported that she heard the owner next door screaming. The owner’s ex-boyfriend broke a window and forced his way into the house. The owner managed to run outside and was assaulted in the driveway. The Police attended to the incident.
ON THURSDAY 07 APRIL 2011:
- 00:31 A medical emergency took place at a residence in Riverstone Road, Sherwood. The owner’s husband had trouble breathing. The Response Officers arrived and assisted. The owner confirmed that he had choked in his sleep and was feeling better.
- 02:24 A residence in Vigne Road, Summerstrand had an attempted burglary. The suspect tried to break through a door, but no entry was gained.
- 07:22 A business in Milliard Crescent, Summerstrand was burgled. The criminals forced open the wooden window frame and a small suspect climbed through the burglar bars. A laptop, an external hard drive and a camera were stolen.
- 08:28 A residence in Frere Close, South End had an attempted burglary. The suspects forced open the back fence, but no entry was gained.
- 08:56 A residence in Second Avenue, Summerstrand was burgled. The suspects forced open the study window and gained entry. A laptop was disconnected but not stolen. It appeared that the criminals were interrupted.
- 09:03 A domestic worker in Woodville Road, Mill Park reported that her wedding band and necklace were missing from her room.
- 17:10 A business in Paterson Road, North End was burgled. A door and a window were smashed.
- 20:20 An attempted robbery took place outside a business in Kragga Kamma Road, Kamma Park. The owner reported that four suspects tried to rob a man. All four suspects fled.
- 21:20 The Response Officers attended to a medical emergency at a residence in Fourie Street, Westering. The owner reported that her brother had suffered a seizure. They assisted until the ambulance arrived to transport him to hospital.
ON WEDNESDAY 06 APRIL 2011:
- 02:17 A premises in Chaumont Road, Lorraine had an attempted burglary. The bedroom window was broken, but no entry was gained.
- 10:16 A neighbour in Westminster Road, Charlo saw four suspects trying to break into a home nearby. The suspects also broke into a vehicle. The Police attended to the incident.
- 14:48 Thieves stole from a business in Govan Mbeki Avenue, North End. Four suspects entered the store and stole a cell phone and fled. A member of the public reported that his bakkie was stolen from outside the premises. It is not clear whether the same suspects were involved.
- 19:04 An attempted hijacking took place at a business in Sixth Avenue, Walmer. The owner locked up and noticed a suspect waiting for him. A second suspect approached the owner and a scuffle ensued. No one was injured and the suspects fled.
- 20:33 A medical emergency took place at a residence in Pelican Road, Greenshields Park. A 68-year-old man was having trouble breathing. The ambulance arrived and transported him to hospital.
