Dear Editor
Despite the 50th celebration of the Volkswagen GOLF, there is surprisingly still not a single model thereof that is in honour & homage of the original designer of that car’s very first generation, namely: Giorgetto Giugiaro. It seems that the stereotypical German bigotry is at play, since the said Giugiaro is Italian and the Scirocco is the closest model name that has come close to an Italian moniker attached to a VW model; or any non-Germanic named VW model for that matter.
Another case study of a similar oversight [or outright disregard] is the dispute doing the rounds that the VW Beetle itself was a prototype that was stolen from a Jewish engineer called Josef Ganz by Adolf Hitler, Ferdinand Porsche and their Nazi ilk … www.josefganz.org …
I hold no particular brief for Giorgetto Giugiaro nor Josef Ganz, but know from personal experience and observation how infuriating it is to have ideas rejected, diluted, stolen and/or chunks thereof taken out without acknowledging, let alone compensating, its originator.
Hopefully, VW will eventually give a Giugiaro nameplate to a special edition Golf in the near future, not forgetting to acknowledge a Jewish guy for providing the seed through the Beetle for the current giant Volkswagen finds itself to be nowadays.
