By all accounts the sod turning for the new BAIC factory at the Coega IDZ was a pretty swanky affair with no expense spared on the amenities and refreshments. Here are some short videos from the event:

Beijing Automobile International Corporation (BAIC) Chairman Xu Hayi and Coega CEO Pepi Silinga sign the historic agreement to establish a R11 Billion Automotive plant in the Coega IDZ, Port Elizabeth.

Some culture before the turning of the first sod at the Coega IDZ. Chinese vehicle manufacturer Beijing Automotive Group (BAIC) and South Africa’s Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) announced today the establishment of a new completely knocked down (CKD) vehicle plant, to be located in the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ), Port Elizabeth.

A BAIC BJ80 seen at the sod turning for Chinese vehicle manufacturer Beijing Automotive Group (BAIC) and South Africa’s Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) establishment of a new completely knocked down (CKD) vehicle plant, to be located in the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ), Port Elizabeth. The aggressive look is reminiscent of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class of vehicles – no surprise as the BAIC build Mercedes vehicles under license in China. The BJ80 is an AWD mid-size SUV. With a 2800mm wheelbase, it is 4780mm long, 1850mm wide, and 1975mm tall. Possible engine options include a petrol 2.4 and 4.0 liter. Hard- and soft-top versions have been developed. With a body-on-frame structure, the BJ80 employs double wishbones for front suspension and multi links in the rear.
