‘Victim’ of house robbery arrested on perjury charge

Port Elizabeth – As a result of sterling investigation skills by a Humewood detective, a 55 year old suspect was arrested on charges of perjury.

It was alleged that the 55 year old man had a gun pointed at him in his residence in the Summerstrand area where he was locked up in his home. He further alleged that his house and car keys were missing and that his vehicle, a white Mercedes Benz were also stolen during the robbery. The detective assigned to the investigation was informed that the vehicle was later recovered in Gelvandale area. The detective followed up on information received from the driver of the alleged stolen vehicle. This prompted the investigating officer to call the suspect in for further questioning regarding the alleged house robbery.

During the interrogation the suspect admitted that he had reported a false case of house robbery and that his car keys and house keys were stolen by a woman that accompanied him to his residence. The suspect was arrested on charges of Perjury, he appeared in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday 2017-04-19 and was released on R500.00 bail with the case was remanded until the 29th of May 2017 pending further investigation.

The Cluster Commander, Major General Funeka Siganga commended the detective for his attentiveness that ultimately led to the arrest of the suspect on charges of perjury. This is seen as a waste of resources and we cannot allow the community to send the SAPS on a wild goose chase. We will not hesitate to act against any member of the community if they report false cases.
