Dr Ven Pillay joins Continental Tyre SA board of directors

Continental Tyre South Africa (CTSA) is strengthening its business and governance strategies with the appointment of Dr Ven Pillay to the company’s board of directors, serving as a non-executive director and chair of its Social and Ethics Committee.

Dr Pillay, who lives in Pretoria, will focus on effective and sustainable corporate governance to strengthen business performance through improved positive impacts of business on society, the natural environment and the broader economy, concomitant with the reduction in risk.

“We are delighted to welcome Dr Pillay to the Continental Tyre SA board, and look forward to benefiting from her wealth of knowledge and experience as an independent sustainability advisor to our Social and Ethics Committee,” said Shaun Uys, managing director of Continental Tyre SA.

“As we develop and grow our business, it’s essential that we embrace and actively pursue the overriding concept of sustainability and effective corporate governance for the company, our employees, the communities we’re active in and the South African economy in general,” Uys added.

“We already have a strong corporate social responsibility programme in Port Elizabeth, with the emphasis on education and developing future leaders. Dr Pillay’s guidance will play an important role in strengthening this role even further.”

Dr Pillay has over 20 years of experience in sustainability and is currently an independent sustainability advisor to executives and boards of various corporate clients. Previously she served as Vice President: Sustainability at AngloGold Ashanti, lectured at the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) in sustainability for the MBA and doctorate programme, and provided strategic support to clients such as Royal Bafokeng Platinum (RBPlat), Edcon, University of Pretoria, Human Science Research Council (HSRC), and University of South Africa (UNISA), amongst others. Until recently she served as an Advisory Committee member at the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) in South Africa.

Currently she is a Trustee for the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT); a board member and chair of the Social and Ethics Committee of PLHMC Medical Services; and is a member of the Institute of Directors (IoDSA) having served on the Sustainable Development Forum.

Her tertiary educational background is in science with a MSc (cum laude) from the University of Durban-Westville and a PhD from the University of Witwatersrand. She has published and presented opinion pieces at various conferences on aspects of sustainability.

Dr Pillay’s expertise in sustainability is supported by her trans-disciplinary knowledge and experience, stringent ethical stance, and strategic thought leadership. She is passionate about demonstrating the value of integrating and embedding sustainability principles into a company’s core business to address risk, and sustain long term growth and profitability, whilst addressing the needs of various stakeholders.
