Unlicensed firearm and ammunition seized in Humansdorp

3 May 2017 By Alan Straton

Police acted swiftly and apprehended a man on receiving positive information. A 34-year-old man was nabbed for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on Tuesday, 2 May 2017 around 21:00. Police on patrol acted on information of a man carrying a bag with a firearm entering a certain house in Nomzamo area, Humansdorp. The police followed up the information and arrested a 34-year-old man for possession of an illegal firearm and 13 rounds of ammunition. Police with the assistance of a CCTV footage, managed to link the man to a house robbery incident that was reported on Monday, 1 May 2017 in Humansdorp around 18:20.

The complainant in the house robbery incident alleged that three men, one with a firearm, stormed into her house situated on Villa Fonte farm about 45km outside Humansdorp. An owner activated a security alarm, and the three suspects managed to grab a cellphone before fleeing on foot. Following the arrest, police detectives managed to arrest a second house robbery suspect today around 08:00. The two men aged 34 and 24 are to appear in the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 4 May 2017 on charges of house robbery, and one suspect to face an additional charge of possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Humansdorp Cluster Commander, Brigadier John Lebok said: “The police are commended for the arrests, but a message of gratitude goes to a resident who heeded police calls for people to report criminal activities. The information that was shared with the police resulted in a breakthrough to another serious case, which could have been fatal. Police would like to encourage more people with information about illegal firearms to share it with the police. The information shared on Crime Stop 08600 10111 is treated confidential and a caller would remain anonymous. Let us share information and support each other in the fight against crime. Information may also be shared via Crime Line SMS 32211”.
