Unearthing The Exceptional

2 December 2015 By Alan Straton

On Tuesday, 24 November 2015 The Tusk Conservation Award Ceremony was held in London. The Port Elizabeth, South African based hotel group, Mantis has been a long-time supporter of the prominent UK charity, TUSK in the fight to protect Africa’s wildlife and was present at the event. They along with Investec were one of the key sponsors on the night. “Mantis has had a long standing relationship with TUSK, they have 53 projects that they support throughout the continent of Africa and they really care about the issues our continent is faced. The fact that their awards evening recognises key individuals that are fighting the conservation war in Africa is amazing and Mantis is proud to be associated with their good work”, commented Mantis’ Group Marketing Director, Paul Gardiner.

Abagail Gardiner (Paul’s wife), who represents South Africa’s Wilderness Foundation in the UK was also present at the awards with the prominent South African wildlife veterinarian, Dr William Fowlds. Tusk has an alliance with the Wilderness Foundation so as to help strengthen their fight to protect wildlife throughout Africa. Both Abagail and William were fortunate enough to have met with and discussed South Africa’s rhino crisis with Prince William, the Royal Patron to Tusk.

The Tusk Conservation Awards have been developed by Tusk Trust in partnership with Investec Asset Management. The awards aim to highlight the outstanding achievements of individuals working within the field of conservation. From practical field conservation to successful environmental education, these awards aim to recognize the achievements of individuals who are ensuring the future of Africa and bringing the challenges faced by the continent to a global audience.

The awards ceremony was hosted by BBC broadcaster and journalist, Kate Silverton, who is a patron of Tusk Trust. Three Tusk Awards were presented, namely:

The Prince William Award for Conservation in Africa, supported by Investec Asset Management. This is a lifetime achievement award, given to a distinguished individual for their outstanding dedication and exceptional contribution to conservation in Africa. This year the award went to X.

The Tusk Conservation Award, supported by Land Rover, recognizes an up-and-coming conservationist whose work has already demonstrated an exceptional commitment to conservation and has made a significant impact to date. This year the award went to X.

The Tusk Wildlife Ranger Award, a new award for 2015, generously donated by Wendy and Henry Breck, recognizes the dedication and bravery of rangers working to protect Africa’s increasingly endangered wildlife. The 2015 winner is Edward Ndiritu, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.
