Focus on health for travellers

When specialists in travel medicine get together in Nelson Mandela Bay for four days next month, they will be discussing the latest developments in a field which impacts millions of lives, but which is largely unrecognised by the general public.

Every year, 600 million people leave their homes to travel elsewhere on the globe. As many as 80 million of these people are travelling from developed to developing countries.
“Globalisation facilitates the spread of infectious diseases and poses challenges for other, non-communicable, travel-related events,” said Adriano Duse, the Scientific Programme Committee Chair for Travel Health Africa – The Boiling Point? The event, which begins on September 28, combines the South African Society of Travel Medicine (SASTM) biennial Congress and the 7th Regional Congress of the International Society of Travel Medicine (ISTM).

The main themes of the Congress include the global epidemiology and management of health risks to travellers, vaccinology, malaria prevention and pre-travel counselling.

Experts from a wide variety of disciplines including epidemiology, infectious diseases, public health, tropical medicine, high-altitude physiology, travel-related obstetrics, psychology/psychiatry, bioethics, occupational medicine and environmental health will illustrate how the landscape of Travel Medicine is changing in the twenty-first century.
