Top Care Womens Clinic on Why Timing Matters in Termination

16 October 2026 By Alan Straton Leave a Comment

Women across Gauteng who find themselves facing an unplanned pregnancy are being urged by Top Care Womens Clinic not to put off getting advice. The private reproductive health provider, which runs branches in Randfontein, Alberton and Dube in Soweto, points out that October opens the final quarter of the year, a time when work deadlines and festive season plans tend to crowd out everything else. Its concern is that delay can make a termination more complicated, more expensive and more difficult to arrange.

The clinic’s advice comes down to one point. A woman who visits a legal abortion clinic sooner is likely to find her options far more straightforward.

Why timing shapes the procedure

For pregnancies of up to 12 weeks, Top Care Womens Clinic performs termination using manual vacuum aspiration (MVA). Beyond 12 weeks, it uses a procedure called dilation and evacuation (D&E). Whichever method applies, the procedure takes place at the clinic and is performed by either a registered nurse or the clinic’s gynaecologist.

If a woman’s pregnancy is already too advanced when she first arrives, the clinic will still take on her care provided her notes are complete. In that case she is booked for a scan or ultrasound and a counselling session within one to two weeks. The clinic stresses that a later termination costs more and carries greater complexity and risk, so it asks women who can come in earlier to do so.

Termination is legal in South Africa under the Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act of 1996, which makes it available on request during the first 12 weeks. Knowing about this window lets women plan with greater certainty and fewer surprises.

An early booking also makes space for the steps that keep care safe. During a consultation, staff can confirm how far the pregnancy has progressed, explain the chosen procedure, answer questions and offer counselling before any decision is made. These steps still take place when a woman presents later, but they are squeezed closer together and she has fewer options to choose from. Making contact at the first sign of pregnancy, even if only for a conversation, keeps all of her choices on the table.

The reasons behind delay

Many women do not seek help early, and the clinic accepts that their reasons are often understandable. Some have not noticed any symptoms yet, so they have no idea anything has changed. Some cannot tell how far along they are. Others are frightened, whether because of religious beliefs or anxiety about the procedure, and a great many simply do not know where to turn.

That final obstacle is the one Top Care Womens Clinic sets out to remove. Its clinics are physical and clearly listed, staffed by qualified professionals, and equipped with private rooms for counselling, examinations and medical procedures. Any woman who phones or walks in can talk through her situation, get a clear picture of where she stands and reach an informed decision at her own pace.

Support at every step

Top Care holds that every woman has the right to decide what is best for herself and her family. At each visit, staff make time to ask patients how they are feeling and provide counselling when it is needed. Because counselling is individualised, it focuses on each patient’s own circumstances instead of following a script.

A woman who would like a partner or family member to accompany her can make use of the clinic’s support line for them. Services are private, confidential and personal, and the facilities are described as clean and modern, with fully stocked medical supplies.

How to pick a legal provider

Waiting too long is one danger, and going to an unregistered seller is another. Anyone comparing abortion clinics should be wary of a provider with no physical address or only a cellphone number, and of anyone who sells or delivers pills or suggests meeting at a taxi rank, a shop or on the street. None of this applies to Top Care Womens Clinic. The clinic does not sell pills, and its procedures are performed legally at its own facilities by registered nurses or its gynaecologist.

A handful of questions before booking can make the difference. Is there a physical clinic? Who performs the procedure? Is counselling offered both before and after? Is follow-up care provided? A genuine provider will answer every one of these openly.

Ongoing care beyond the first visit

Termination is only part of what Top Care does. It is a full women’s clinic whose team provides preventative care aimed at helping patients avoid unexpected pregnancies and reproductive cancers later on. Its services include:

  • Advice on contraception and the available options, such as tablets, injections and patches, with both partners encouraged to understand the choices
  • Testing for STIs including HIV, syphilis, herpes, hepatitis, chlamydia and gonorrhoea, supported by pre and post-test counselling
  • Cervical screening and pap smears
  • Wellness check-ups, among them well woman exams and pregnancy tests

A visit prompted by an unplanned pregnancy often turns into the start of regular reproductive health care for many women, and the breadth of the clinic’s services allows that care to carry on in the same confidential environment.
