Top Care Warns Against Backstreet Abortion Pill Sellers

13 August 2026 By Alan Straton

Women’s Month arrives in August, and Top Care Women’s Clinic is using the occasion to send a clear message to women throughout Gauteng: a safe termination of pregnancy belongs in a clinic and is a genuine medical procedure, never a strip of tablets passed over at a taxi rank. Registered as a legal service provider, the clinic wants people to see the gulf between properly qualified care and the unregistered operators who advertise bargain terminations yet keep no premises, employ no qualified staff and provide no aftercare.

This is a caution the clinic has voiced for some time. Top Care Women’s Clinic keeps a straightforward public notice describing exactly how illegal operators behave. According to that notice, such operators keep no physical address, publish only a cellphone number, run no clinic at all, and do nothing more than sell or drop off pills. They set up meetings with women at taxi ranks, in the parking lots of shops, or out on the street. Top Care Women’s Clinic makes it plain that it neither sells pills nor meets patients in public spaces. Everything it does takes place within one of its clinics.

Working as a legal abortion clinic, Top Care carries out termination of pregnancy either through a registered nurse or through its gynaecologist. Choice and safety sit at the heart of how the clinic sees itself, and it describes what it offers as a safe, confidential and affordable alternative for pregnant women seeking an abortion. The mission it sets out is to deliver comprehensive reproductive health care, centred on termination of pregnancy, within a caring and confidential environment.

Safe, legal termination by qualified staff

The surgical termination Top Care Women’s Clinic provides depends on the stage a pregnancy has reached. Manual vacuum aspiration is used for women up to twelve weeks gestation. Once a pregnancy passes twelve weeks, the clinic carries out a dilation and evacuation procedure. Its physical premises are staffed by qualified nurses, with dedicated rooms for counselling, examinations and medical procedures.

Counselling is built into the process at Top Care rather than tacked on at the end. When a woman comes in, staff make the time to discuss how she is feeling and provide counselling wherever it is called for. A support line is also available for a partner or family member who wishes to accompany her. The clinic points out that some women arrive later in a pregnancy because they do not realise their gestation, feel anxious about the decision, or have no idea where to go, and it urges women against delay, given that later terminations bring higher costs and greater risk.

More than a termination service

Termination may be at the core of its work, but Top Care presents itself as a full-service reproductive health provider. In its capacity as a women’s clinic, it provides contraception counselling for patients and partners alike, spanning tablets, injections and patches, and it places weight on ensuring people grasp every option before they settle on one.

Testing for sexually transmitted infections is another service the clinic runs, screening for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis, chlamydia, gonorrhoea and herpes, together with counselling before and after the test. No appointment is needed for testing, and walk-in visits are welcome. Pap smears round out the preventative side of the practice, checking for cell changes that may signal cervical cancer as well as certain infections. Top Care advises women to have this simple test regularly, casting it as a small measure that safeguards health over the long term.

Three branches across Johannesburg

Three physical branches make up Top Care Women’s Clinic across Johannesburg, Gauteng. On the East Rand, the Alberton branch sits at 31 Newquay Road, New Redruth. In Soweto, the branch is in Dube, at the Ekhaya Centre on Mncube Street. On the West Rand, the Randfontein branch is at 49 B Village Street. Every one is a staffed clinic with consulting and procedure rooms, something the practice holds up as the surest indicator of a legitimate service against an operator who can only be contacted by phone. Opening hours run Monday to Friday from 8am to 4pm and Saturday from 8am to 2pm.

That contrast counts in a market where unregistered abortion clinics keep advertising freely on street poles and across social media. By steering women toward a fixed address, qualified staff and genuine counselling, Top Care hopes to turn the safe choice into the obvious one. Women’s Month, the clinic suggests, makes a fitting moment to restate that message, because so much of the risk stems from women being unaware that a private, legal and affordable option lies within their reach.

Confidentiality threads through the entire way the clinic talks about its work. It underlines that its services are wholly private and personal, and that the decision belongs to the woman alone. This framing is intentional, meant to reassure patients who may feel pushed to keep their circumstances hidden and who might otherwise be drawn in by the false privacy that back street sellers pretend to provide.

Any woman wanting to grasp the clinic’s safe, legal services in full can read everything on the Top Care Women’s Clinic website at https://topcarewomensclinic.co.za/.

Pregnancies that turn out to be more advanced than expected are handled with the same care. Should a pregnancy prove too far along at a first visit, staff will manage the patient wherever her notes are complete but may schedule a scan or ultrasound and a follow-up counselling session within one to two weeks. Top Care presses women not to postpone seeking care, because the further a pregnancy advances, the more complex, costly and risky the termination grows. This practical advice accompanies the clinic’s broader point that a proper medical setting protects a woman’s health in a way an anonymous pill sale never can.

On the preventative front, the sexually transmitted infection service is designed around access. Testing is offered on weekdays, walk-ins need no appointment, and the clinic handles both on-site testing and referrals when samples must be sent to a laboratory. Staff additionally arrange referrals for the screening and treatment of conditions like yeast infections, warts, urinary tract infections and cytology screening. When it comes to Pap smears, the clinic suggests a first test once a woman becomes sexually active and regular checks thereafter, calling the test a simple step capable of saving a life.
