Toilet Paper Prices up by 421%

23 March 2020 By Alan Straton

Looks like Spain leads the Way with TP Profit Taking

As we see Coronavirus fueling fear buying, Euromonitor International’s new intelligence pricing solution – Via – tracked key consumer good categories prices in specific countries to analyze how supply and demand are affecting price changes in the e-commerce environment.

Toilet paper

  • Spain, France, Germany and the United States lead the ranking with the highest medium price growth of toilet paper, with increases of 412%, 318%, 253% and 236%, respectively.
  • In Brazil, the increase was an average of 2% during the period.
  • The only countries showing a price decrease are China, with – 4% and South Korea, with – 0.25%.

Bottled Water

  • Germany leads the ranking with an increase of 17.5%, followed by Brazil, with 12.6% and the United Kingdom, with 4%.
  • In opposition to the countries above, the United States fell by 25%.

“Through Via – Euromonitor’s e-commerce price monitoring solution – we verified that countries that are approaching the peak of Coronavirus incidence have shown a significant increase in the average price of toilet paper in the last 30 days. The price increase is due to a basic economy equation, but also, in some countries, there is the fact that factories have had their production affected and this could cause a decrease in the availability of certain consumer goods.

On the other hand, we began to observe a negative price variation in the last 15 days (monitoring carried out from February 27 to March 11) in countries who are at already an advanced stage of the epidemic, noticing negative price variation in toilet paper during the last 15 days, such as in Italy.

Following this trend, countries that are facing the initial phase of the epidemic should also experience similar variations, especially after the growth of cases recorded in the last few weeks and which should directly impact the supply chain and the purchasing behaviour of consumers in the coming days”, explains Alexis Frick, research manager at Euromonitor International.
