Three hijacking suspects arrested

Three men were arrested after they allegedly hijacked a vehicle (VW Polo) on the morning of 14 December 2015 in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage. The arrest follows after the hijacked vehicle with four suspects inside overturned during a police chase in San Souci Road, Despatch.

The four suspects hijacked a black VW Polo at the Fan Park in Mqolomba Street, KwaNobuhle with a male and a female passenger inside. It is alleged that the four suspects accosted the couple, tied them up with a rope and one of the suspects raped the woman. The two victims were then thrown into an empty dam, while the suspects fled with a car and the victims’ cellphones.

The male victim managed to loose himself and alerted the police. After the vehicle circulation, Despatch police spotted it driving down San Souci Road and gave chase while requesting back-up from nearby stations. The driver of the hijacked vehicle lost control and overturned while one suspect was thrown out of the vehicle window. A second suspect was still inside and a third one was arrested in the nearby bushes while trying to flee on foot.

One suspect is still at large, and the police are expecting an imminent arrest.

The three (3) suspects aged between 18 and 31 appeared in the Kwanobuhle Magistrate’s Court today Tuesday, 15 December 2015 facing charges of carjacking and rape.
