This Season’s Chevrolet Warriors Cricket Squad

21 June 2011 By Alan Straton

Cricket Eastern Cape (Pty) Ltd (CEC) today announced the Chevrolet Warriors Squad for the 2011/2012 season. The CEC philosophy of “home-grown” talent has played a large role in the selection of the squad for the season.

The squad is as follows:

  • Bevan Bennett
  • Andrew Birch
  • Nicky Boje
  • Arno Jacobs
  • Davy Jacobs
  • Justin Kreusch
  • Garnett Kruger
  • Lyall Meyer
  • Makhaya Ntini
  • Jon-Jon Smuts
  • Kelly Smuts
  • Craig Thyssen
  • Basheer Walters
  • Reece Williams
  • Jerry Nqolo – Rookie Contract
  • David White – Rookie Contract
  • Aya Gqamane – Semi-Pro Contract
  • Athenkosi Dyili – Semi-Pro Contract

Aya Gqamane is a right arm medium/fast bowler playing for the Border team who has shown great potential. The other newcomers include Athi Dyili who was previously contracted to the Warriors. He recently won the Eastern Province Player of the Year and has shown tremendous growth as both a batsman and wicket keeper. David White is the youngest member of the squad and has had a good start to his first class career.

The Cricket SA contracted players who have nominated the Chevrolet Warriors as their franchise for the 2011/2012 season are:

  • Johan Botha
  • Colin Ingram
  • Wayne Parnell
  • Ashwell Prince
  • Rusty Theron
  • Lonwabo Tsotsobe

Mark Boucher and Jacques Kallis are to play their franchise cricket for the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras this season. Both Kallis and Boucher are grateful to the fans, fellow players and administrators for the manner in which they were welcomed and supported during their stint with the Warriors.

“Since the start of my cricket playing days, I have spent most of my domestic playing time with the Eastern Cape franchise and my heart holds a very special place for the people, the fans, the staff, my fellow cricketers and the coaches I have met and played with along the way.

For me the Chevrolet Warriors is one of the best run franchises in the country and Dave Emslie is a massive part of that. It was a huge and difficult decision for me to leave the Warriors but Cape Town is my home and I do need to be based there, to explore business opportunities for my future. Before returning to the Warriors, we had narrowly missed a couple of titles and I am extremely proud to have been part of the team that has earned some trophies. Thinking back on those celebrations brings back memories of great times” said Boucher.

Jacques Kallis, CSA Player of the Year said “I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of the best run franchise for the last couple of years. I am moving back to Cape Town to spend more family time at home but will take with me only good memories and experiences of my time spent at the Warriors. The framed picture showing the Warriors celebrating the MTN40 and Standard Bank pro20 victories in the 2009/2010 season which I was sent, takes pride of place on my bar wall and I am pleased to have been part of those victories”.

“We fully appreciate the respective positions of Jacques and Mark and thank them for their contribution to the efforts of the Chevrolet Warriors. Whenever they have played they have given a full commitment and in doing so proved to be  examples to our young cricketers that we are striving so hard to develop. In a sense their moving on creates welcome opportunities for our aspiring cricketers who we are sure will grab the opportunity and themselves be the Kallis’s and Bouchers of the future.” said Dave Emslie CEO.

“The CEC Board are very happy with the squad selection for this season. It is a very good sign that the newly contracted players are youngsters that are truly “homegrown”. Our Chevrolet/Jag High Performance Programmes are instrumental in unearthing and honing talent in our region and the contracting of 3 youngsters shows that we are on the right track. They have bright futures and we look forward to watching them grow as professionals. The rest of the squad are well established cricketers and together with the younger players will combine to form a formidable squad this season” said CEC Chairman Chris Nenzani.
