This is WHY the Water Restrictions Have NOT Been Lifted

The Metro dam levels show a significant improvement at 76.7 % after the recent rains.

Please note that the Metro’s main dedicated supply dams the Churchill and Impofu are the only ones that are not yet full and we have been informed that it is important to consider this when determining when restrictions are likely to be lifted or whether full or partial water restrictions will be retained.

I have also been informed that representatives from the metro will be meeting with the Department of Water Affairs to discuss the matter of restrictions during the week. It is quite possible that some measures of curtailment will be retained in order to better secure our LONG TERM water supply .

Recent experiences confirm that our recent water crisis was largely as a result of the combination of liberal usage of our water reserves and lack of planning and foresight on the part of the metro.

Please remain careful with your water consumption so that our water supply can go further. Water remains a scarce commodity in a dry country and we need to treat it with care. Any level below 60% is cause for concern.

The Metro has been using an average of 233 Ml per day as against the previous 300 Ml before restrictions – a saving of more than 20%, which if applied earlier could have resulted in dam levels being above 40% rather than the 31% of a few weeks ago.

We have also been informed that the Nooitgedacht scheme upgrade supply is only due to be operative in 2012.
