The Valuator Group Values Art, Classic Cars and Collections

16 September 2026 By Alan Straton Leave a Comment

When a company sits down to compile its asset register, the same familiar items go in first. Property, structures, the fleet, the machinery bolted to the workshop floor. The trouble is what gets left off the list. A canvas hanging above the boardroom table, a ring shut away in a vault, the lovingly rebuilt sports car sleeping under a dust sheet, an autographed jersey behind glass, a small plane tied down at a private airfield. These are exactly the holdings that are toughest to replace and toughest to substantiate, and they are the ones that so often go unrecorded. The Valuator Group, a boutique South African valuation firm operating across Africa, the Indian Ocean Islands, the Middle East and the United Kingdom, devotes a large part of each year to these very categories, which makes September 2026 a sensible time for owners and organisations to ask what their own paperwork still leaves out.

The firm calls itself a one-stop boutique valuation business acting for individuals, corporations and governments, and the list of services it publishes stretches well beyond bricks and mortar. In addition to land, structures and improvements, it handles plant, machinery, equipment and technical assets such as vehicles, art, antiques, jewellery and contents, agricultural interests including farms, game lodges and reserves, light aircraft, marine assets like luxury yachts and boats, landscaped gardens, sports memorabilia, restaurant equipment, vintage and classic cars, business and share equity valuations, and a general heading the company simply labels all other movable assets. The range is deliberate. Having one provider deliver documented and certified valuations across every class an owner holds closes the gaps that open up when separate categories are assigned to separate people applying separate methods.

The categories a property valuation does not reach

A property report responds only to a property question. It has nothing to say about the contents, and it is within the contents that a surprising amount of value tends to gather unnoticed. The Valuator Group approaches each specialist class in its own right instead of lumping it into one broad contents number.

In the field of art, antiques, jewellery and contents, the firm reports that it has handled prestigious art collections, museums, galleries, and private art and antique portfolios. This is not a quick tour with a notepad. Items are catalogued and, where suitable, photographed. Complete collection registers are assembled, either with images or without them. Any relevant history, literature and provenance is documented. Artwork collections can be digitised. Collection management reaches into conservation and sustainability, including referral for restoration when it is called for, and the firm additionally provides referral to specialist experts for buying and selling. For public sector and institutional owners, it offers GRAP 103 compliance, the accounting standard covering how heritage assets are treated.

Vintage and classic cars fall to a select team of assessors. The firm points out that the worth of a classic or vintage car turns on several considerations, among them make and model, condition and prior ownership, and that its assessors remain alert to market conditions when appraising a vehicle. Reports are drawn up both for market value and for insurance replacement cost. On its website the company lists an opening price of R1 000 excluding VAT for a classic car valuation, which brings a documented figure within reach of a single owner rather than only a fleet operator or a dealership.

Sports memorabilia is characterised by the firm as an intensely specialised area that can only be undertaken by valuators with years of experience in the industry, where rarity and importance determine the result. This is carried out for insurance, for market purposes, or for both, and the firm emphasises the confidentiality and privacy that accompany it. That same logic runs through the remainder of the specialist list. Light aircraft, landscaped gardens, restaurant equipment and marine assets each have distinct value drivers, and not one of them lends itself to a blanket per square metre sum.

What documented and certified actually means

The wording the firm applies to what it produces is documented and certified valuations for Open Market Value and Estimated New Replacement Cost for insurance purposes. The two figures address separate questions. Open Market Value is the price an asset would command. Estimated New Replacement Cost is the sum required to restore the owner to their former position. Across a collection the two can diverge widely, and an owner who has only ever been given one figure is operating on half the story.

The firm belongs to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and states that it observes the international standards and ethics laid down in the RICS Red Book. It is also a BEE accredited company. It names professionalism, credibility, confidentiality and service excellence as the values underpinning the work, and it says it stands behind its valuations and will serve as arbitrator should an insurance claim arise. That final undertaking counts for more than it may seem at first glance. A valuation is worth only as much as its capacity to withstand challenge at the moment someone contests it, and a report supported by certified valuators prepared to defend their own numbers is a fundamentally different instrument from an estimate with nothing behind it.

Registers, surveys and the longer view

Over and above single reports, the firm provides asset register identification and compilation, risk survey property reports, valuation advisory services and an ecology management survey report. It also runs a Long Term Assistance Plan, typically over five years, for clients who prefer to have their records kept up to date rather than rebuilt from the ground up each time a question surfaces.

The difference between a one-off task and a maintained record deserves some thought. Specialist assets are not static. A collection expands. A car receives further restoration. One piece is sold and another bought. An institution takes in new heritage items. A register captured once and then set aside starts slipping out of line with reality almost at once, and that drift stays hidden until it is put to the test. Keeping the record current takes far less effort than rebuilding it afterwards, especially for classes where provenance and condition history are part of the value.

Who the work is for

The Valuator Group describes its clientele as corporations including banks, insurers, brokers and large business, private individuals, partnerships, other businesses, farming concerns, heritage bodies, and government and institutional organisations. That range shows how differently the identical service gets put to use at either end. A private collector might want an inventory of what is in the home together with a defensible figure per item. A farming enterprise might need land, improvements, implements and livestock infrastructure dealt with consistently in a single exercise. A museum or heritage organisation might need a catalogued collection that meets an accounting standard. An insurer or broker might need an independent third party figure written by neither of the parties involved.

Geographic reach

Founded more than fifteen years ago, the firm operates across Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands, as well as the Middle East and the United Kingdom, through a network taking in Johannesburg, London, New York, Brussels, Dubai, New Delhi, Hong Kong, Beijing and Sydney. For South African owners whose assets are held or shifted across borders, that footprint delivers a single provider and a single reporting standard rather than an assortment of separate local reports that fail to line up with one another.
