The Undisputed Night Relay Champions

29 August 2018 By Alan Straton

Investec Ladies
Town Lodge Port Elizabeth Assistant General Manager Marais Meyer hands over the floating trophy to the record breaking ladies relay team from Investec at the Town Lodge Business Night Relay on Tuesday evening.
With 4 wins in 4 months and a new course record, this winter’s Town Lodge Business Night Relay was certainly another memorable one for the boys from the Gamble Pharmacy Corporate team. Untouchable this season and rewriting the record books with their 55 minutes and 23 seconds blitzing of the course record at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium last season, the team came out on Tuesday night as confident as ever and walk away with the gold medals once again in a time of 57 minutes 20 seconds.

“Despite the blustery and cold conditions on the evening, it was a great end to the season with 69 teams taking part this month, ” said Series organiser Mike Zoetmulder from Zsports Events NPC. “It’s been a well supported winter for the Town Lodge Business Night Relay with teams loving the uniqueness of running within the iconic stadium in a safe and secure environment and one wonders whether we should be considering running the Series throughout summer as well.”

Another exceptional performance on the evening was the breaking of the Ladies course record with Team Investec flying through in 1 hour 15 minutes to set the new benchmark as they were pushed the whole way by the ladies from SPAR DC and the Teambos ‘F’ team. In the Men’s, SPAR DC Men took silver and the ‘B’ team from Teambos taking the bronze. In the popular Mixed teams category, with 31 teams entered, Gamble Pharmacy won in 1 hour 3 minutes from the Up & Running team and Teambos ‘A’ side.

With no fewer than 15 teams taking part in the walking category, it was the unbeaten trio representing Concord Cranes Group that stomped to victory in 1 hour 11 minutes to crown an undefeated season for themselves. The walkers from 3 Furious were 2nd and LEAD 2 placed 3rd on the evening.

The Town Lodge Business Night Relay is a unique event to Nelson Mandela Bay taking place on the last Tuesday evening during winter with teams of 5 runners or 3 walkers each completing a 3.5km lap within the stadium precinct. Full results from the Series is available on www.nightrelay.co.za. Next up for the teams will be the Mandela Bay Development Agency hosted Urban Run charity obstacle race through the City Centre on Sunday 9th September.
