The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium Reaches New Heights

15 August 2011 By Alan Straton

The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth is abuzz this week with the focus of two nations on the all important Springboks vs All Blacks tri-nations test on Saturday.

When events such as this happen in Port Elizabeth – or, as Springboks Coach Peter de Villiers put it this morning; “.. this little place” – I want to shake our City Fathers awake and point out to them that Port Elizabeth, the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium and our incredibly friendly residents have now moved this area to TOP OF MIND for anyone contemplating a holiday here.

On top of that tourism is the second largest industry in this area, after the automotive industry, and we need to punt these types of events for all they are worth to our beleaguered economy.

Not only do we have millions of people talking about the upcoming game, but they are busy Blogging, Facebooking, Tweeting and Google +ing like mad – and it all centres around Port Elizabeth and our wonderful people.

Then we get guys like Edward from Photo Addict who spends a good few hours producing an image to make our stadium look brillaint with the two main sports – rugby and soccer – featuring prominently in the image below.

Yup, not only is the stadium going to be a hive of activity as far as rugby goes but two soccer teams – Jomo Cosmos and Maritzburg United – have agreed to play a total of six matches at the stadium between 30 October 2011 and 21 April 2012.

The Jomo Cosmos and Maritzburg United Soccer fixtures at the NMB Stadium are as follows:

  • 30 October 2011 – Jomo Cosmos vs Orlando Pirates
  • 1 November 2011 – Maritzburg United vs Kaizer Chiefs
  • 15 February 2012 – Jomo Cosmos vs Kaizer Chiefs
  • 14 March 2012 – Maritzburg United vs Bloemfontein Celtic
  • 18 April 2012 – Jomo Cosmos vs Bloemfontein Celtic
  • 21 April 2012 – Maritzburg United vs vs Mamelodi Sundowns

Tell us what you think of Edward’s Tribute image in the comments section below.

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. Alan's ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
