The Lucky One (2012) Movie Review

If you’re looking for a decent romantic drama that is great for a Date Night, then look no further than The Lucky One.

The film centers around a Marine who finds a photograph of a woman while on a tour in Iraq and believes it serves as a lucky charm for him during some trying times in battle. He returns to the US and he sets out to search for her and thank her for saving his life. What follows is a good story which leads you on a pleasant 101 minute journey, which helps you appreciate how the men in the military sacrifice so much for their country, as well as a good romantic tale to go along with it. The story goes along at a good pace and leads to a somewhat unpredictable ending.

Zac Efron plays the Marine, Logan, while Taylor Schilling plays the naturally pretty Beth. Efron has come a long way from the teenager in High School Musical and I believe he is set to become one of Hollywoods leading men, particularly in a romantic genre. Schilling is a relatively unknown name who is better known for her roles in TV series such as Mercy, and we may see more of her in a new upcoming series in 2013. They are supported by veteran actress Blythe Danner who has appeared in almost 100 titles. The rest of the supporting actors are not big names, but the entire cast do a good job in this film.

The Lucky One is rated PG-13 for some sexual content and violence, and I would suggest it for mature 13’s and above.

This film does more than walk you through the usual hum drum of a RomCom and questions deeper issues which makes it worth the watch. Although it won 3 Teen Choice Awards it won’t change the face of film, but is definitely worth renting on a Date Night with your partner. Get it on DVD from one of the many rental stores in Port Elizabeth.
