The Longhair is Adamant – We are Going to Overnight at the Kirkwood Wildsfees

25 May 2011 By Alan Straton

For the first time last year, the Longhair and I toddled off to the ABSA Kirkwood Wildsfees festival in the wild hinterland of the Eastern Cape. That we were graciously given entrance tickets still didn’t stop me from grumbling about the expense of diesel; “Just to see more bloody stalls!”

Well we were quite impressed. I wanted to say; “Blown Away” but those who know me will know the near impossibility of that ever happening! So impressed were we with the Kirkwood Wildsfees that the Longhair started on at me immediately after to get accommodation in Kirkwood for the 10th anniversary fees this year from 1 to 3 July. Of course I told her to chill as I had a dastardly plan which involved leaning on my brother who is a  co-owner of the Geelhoutboom Guest House.

He is still laughing as there is no room at his inn which was booked in 2010 for 2011’s Wildfees already.

Fair warning – if you intend to stay overnight to catch the Parlotones on Saturday 2 July at 10:00 pm and not ride back to Port Elizabeth you had better pick and choose from the Available Accommodation in Addo.

Of course we have now downgraded our expectations and are hoping to secure a spot for a tent for the night as we would like to stay overnight and at least do a bit of a jive on Sunday with Kurt Darren’s number one PE fan, Theo Klaas from Bay FM. Theo is so hardcore that he even has ‘Kaptein’ as his ringtone. Just before Kurt plays at 2:00 pm you will be able to catch Elvis Blue at 12:00 pm and Emo (Tall, Dark and Afrikaans) Adams at 1:00 pm.

Festival Director, Jenni Honsbein estimates that of the 38 000 visitors to the festival last year, 14 000 were die hard, repeat visitors. Well she can now say 14 002.

Of course the big highlight of the ABSA Kirkwood Wildsfees is the game auction at 12:00 pm on Saturday 2 July. One of the prized lots up for auction will be 51 of Addo National Park’s world famous disease free buffalo, some in calf.

Click through to the ABSA Kirkwood Wildsfees program here or from the ad in the RHS Sidebar.
