The Gold Avenue Urges Krugerrand Holders to Avoid Private Sales to Strangers

22 October 2026 By Alan Straton

Johannesburg residents holding Krugerrands are being urged by The Gold Avenue not to sell them privately to buyers found through online listings, social media or community groups. The Illovo, Sandton company, which buys Krugerrands, gold, diamonds and luxury watches, notes that a private deal can seem appealing because the seller chooses the asking price, yet nearly all of the risk ends up resting on the person who owns the coins.

A seasonal question that should start with safety

Spring has arrived in Gauteng, and households are starting to think about their plans for the end of the year. The Gold Avenue has found that selling follows the seasons, with summer reliably busier than winter. October is the month when many long-term Krugerrand holders begin asking where they should sell, and the company wants safety to be the first thing they consider.

The risks hidden in a private deal

Selling privately strips away all the safeguards that a registered buyer offers. Without testing, the buyer can dispute what the Krugerrands are, or the seller can end up paid for less than they actually handed over. Without documentation, nothing records who bought what or for how much. Without a secure venue, the exchange tends to happen in a car park, a coffee shop or someone’s home, where the seller is carrying a valuable holding and the other party knows it.

Getting paid carries its own dangers. A screenshot of proof of payment can be forged, a transfer can be reversed and banknotes can be fake. After the Krugerrands have been handed over, the seller has almost no way to recover them.

Simple steps for a safer sale

The Gold Avenue keeps its advice for Johannesburg sellers simple. Only deal at the premises of a registered buyer, or through an appraisal arranged by that buyer. Do not give Krugerrands to a stranger who says they will pay after checking them. Avoid advertising the sale on social media or in community groups. Leave the coins in their tubes or capsules and carry them out of sight. Choose an immediate EFT into an account held in your own name, and if you want cash, give advance notice so it can be prepared inside a secure building.

Where to Sell Krugerrands without the exposure

Anyone researching Where to Sell Krugerrands should, the company says, choose a buyer that deals with each of these risks one by one. The Gold Avenue is based on the 8th floor of Illovo Point, a AAA grade office building with boom controlled access, underground parking, 24 hour CCTV and guarding. Sellers are never assessed at an open counter or in a public space. Each assessment takes place across a desk in a private consultation room.

A Purchasing Consultant weighs and verifies every Krugerrand on that desk, in front of the seller, using Niton XRF equipment and dedicated verification tools. The coins never leave the seller’s sight. The offer is explained before the seller decides anything, the valuation costs nothing and there is no obligation to accept.

How the price is calculated

Since a Krugerrand is a recognised bullion product with a known gold content, its value tracks the gold price closely. The Gold Avenue prices Krugerrands using the live international gold price, the rand on the day, current local trade prices and the amount its established trade customers are willing to pay at that time. Every size is valued on its own fraction of an ounce, which means halves, quarters and tenths are never rounded down to the seller’s cost. Proof Krugerrands in presentation boxes are assessed as proofs, and the company asks sellers not to clean or polish them.

The gold price and the rand never stop moving, so an honest buyer cannot give a fixed rand amount without first seeing the seller’s coins. The price is calculated on the day of the visit, against the market as it stands.

Payment designed around the seller

Once a seller accepts, their details are recorded on an iPad and they sign a one page Sale Agreement electronically. The money is paid by immediate EFT with immediate clearance across participating South African banks, so it reaches the seller’s account before they walk out. Cash can be arranged subject to compliance and the cash on hand, and bigger cash amounts require a few business days’ notice. A typical visit lasts ten to fifteen minutes, and returning clients whose details are already on file are often paid in less than five.

FICA applies to every purchase, so sellers must bring a South African ID, passport or valid South African driver’s licence, along with proof of banking details. The Gold Avenue believes sellers should walk away from any buyer who does not ask for identification.

Where to Sell Krugerrands Near Me when getting there is a problem

Some sellers would rather not drive into Sandton carrying their Krugerrands. For anyone looking up Where to Sell Krugerrands Near Me, The Gold Avenue offers home and office appraisals throughout Gauteng, plus secure couriers for sellers who live further away. The assessment is identical no matter where the appraisal takes place, payment is made by immediate EFT after an offer is accepted, and the Krugerrands are returned if the seller says no.

Walk-in clients are welcome at the Illovo office during business hours. Those who book by phone, WhatsApp, email, the website or social media are sent directions with photographs of the entrance, parking and lift ahead of their visit, and a room is waiting for them on arrival.

What makes the Best Place to Sell Krugerrands

In The Gold Avenue’s view, the Best Place to Sell Krugerrands brings together secure premises, testing done in front of the seller, an offer that is explained, a signed agreement and immediate payment that can be traced. The company is a registered second hand goods dealer under the Second-Hand Goods Act, is registered with the National Credit Regulator and with FICA, and belongs to the Second-Hand Dealers and Pawn Board and the Jewellery Council of South Africa. It purchases one ounce, half, quarter and tenth ounce Krugerrands, whether single coins, full sets or mixed holdings, in both bullion and proof.

Holders who need cash today but hope to keep their Krugerrands in the long run can use The Gold Avenue’s Buyback Agreement. The company buys the coins and pays the seller, who then has the option to buy them back on an agreed date at a price fixed upfront. For the duration of the agreement, the Krugerrands are kept in a safe as insured stock.

The Gold Avenue opened in April 2022, has since served over 3,000 clients and carries a 5.0 rating on Google.
