Sharing a world of dreams with the global TED (Technology, Entrainment and Design) and TEDx community, TEDxPortElizabeth will launch their first conference this year with the theme Through the Looking Glass.

TEDxPortElizabeth continues on from TEDxSummerstrand (2013) and TEDxNMMU (2012), both events organized by students from NMMU who have since graduated and left Port Elizabeth.

On 19 February the first event, TEDxPortElizabethLive, was hosted at the NMB Science & Technology Centre in Uitenhage. This was a live web-stream of the annual TED Conference in Vancouver, Canada. Over 35 people enjoyed TED Talks by the founders of AirBnB and Uber amongst other interesting topics.

The people of Nelson Mandela Bay have the opportunity to be captivated by the one and only Farah Fortune known in the entertainment industry as the pitbull in heels, she is the CEO of African Star Communications a publicist company with offices in Lagos, Nigeria and Johannesburg, South Africa she publicises the best celebrities in the entertainment industry so her talk is no to be missed.

Deshun Desyl – a former school teacher from Uitenhage, now based in Johannesburg- powered into the history books during 1996 by being part of the first group of South Africans to plant the new democratic flag on top of Mount Everest. Deshun, Laureus Sports Ambassador, then moved on to become an international business coach. Starting her own business called Deshun Deysel & Associates using keynotes, coaching, seminars and adventurous experiences, to encourage leaders in their struggle to harness diversity for better work performance.

Wikimedia Editor and Board member on the South African chapter, Bobby Shabangu, yarned for articles native to people and traditions of Africa, In late 2012, he began to edit both isiSwati and English Wikipedia articles. “I discovered that if I don’t edit, no one will edit,” he says. “[I wanted] to activate people into talking about Wikipedia and the work they do and everything that’s actually how I got involved with the whole thing.” Today, Bobby volunteers with the Jo’burgpediA project, which aims to improve Wikipedia’s coverage of the city of Johannesburg.

“After attending the TEDGlobal conference in Arusha, Tanzania in 2007 I have become very active in speaking and organising TEDx events in China and South Africa,” says Ramon Thomas, TEDxPortElizabeth founder. After returning home with an MBA degree from China, Thomas started recruiting a team of enthusiastic volunteers from Uitenhage, Zwide and the greater Port Elizabeth area.

A full lineup of twelve experts in the fields of Technology, Entertainment and Design will present at TEDxPortElizabeth. The talks will be filmed and shared on the TEDx YouTube channel – an opportunity to showcase Nelson Mandela Bay’s best and brightest on the global stage.

The 2016 TEDx conference will take place at new AFDA Port Elizabeth campus, 28 Bird Street, Central on Friday, 1 July 2016. Only 100 tickets for this conference will go on sale online at www.tedxportelizabeth.org.za
