Talented Framesby golfer aims for the next level

Framesby golfer Zahn Scholtz is aiming to take her game to the next level after breaking into the top 20 of the national junior women’s rankings published by the Compleat Golfer magazine.

The 17-year-old matric pupil slots in at No 17 on the latest list and has her eye on cracking the top 10 this year before leaving to study and to play overseas on an American scholarship.

Scholtz, who was born and raised in Port Elizabeth, said her move up the rankings provided motivation for the future.

“It feels like all the hard work has paid off and I am extremely proud of what I have been able to achieve,” she said.

“My dad [Theo] has been a huge influence on my golf game and he has helped me achieve what I have by encouraging me to do my best. Besides him, my mom [Estelle] and brother [Tommie] have always been there to support me.

“Also my coach, Graeme Whale, is a big part of my golfing development and he is always available to help me improve my game.”

The PE Golf Club member has a best round of 67, achieved at Wedgewood, also the scene of the occasion of golf’s perfect strike when, at the age of 15, she aced the par-three seventh hole.

Scholtz is comfortable off the tee and says the driver is her favourite club in the bag.

“That [driving] is definitely the best aspect of my game,” she said. “My aim going forward is to improve my short game, especially my chipping around the greens.

“Golf is part of my daily routine and I try to go to the range four times a week and play three times.”

During her career, Scholtz has represented the EP U18 girls’ team and the provincial women’s team, as well as turning out for the EP U17 boys’ side last year.

Now she is looking to build on that as an exciting career and the opportunity to test herself on the tough American collegiate circuit lie ahead.
