South Africa’s roads are expected to be packed with holidaymakers taking the reluctant journey home on Sunday, many in extreme heat.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation has reminded drivers to be patient, not to overtake on a barrier line, and to stick to the speed limit during one of the busiest periods on the country’s roads.
Watch out for pedestrians and don’t answer your cellphone while driving, urged the RTMC.
It also reminded parents to strap their children in and to keep tiny tots in their baby seats and booster seats.
The SA Weather Service warned that it would be extremely hot and uncomfortable in some parts of the country on Sunday, especially parts of the Eastern Cape, Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.
Western Cape traffic spokesperson Kenny Africa said drivers should leave early when it is cooler, if they can, and take regular stops – at least every 200km.
“Do more stops, get cold drinks, have a wet cloth in the car with you and be really awake,” he said.
Passengers can help by keeping drivers engaged so that there is no danger of them nodding off.
The N3 Toll Concession tweeted that volumes were already high on Sunday morning towards Johannesburg, with around 1 500 vehicles passing the Mooi Plaza in KwaZulu-Natal.

Watch as this Opel Adam punches above it’s weight to swallow loads of luggage and stuff before setting off back to Cape Town today:
The debate is over: My Sister in law from Cape Town has proven that Adam swallows and swallows – far above his supposed 34 x five litre Papsak boot space. And he never spat once…..
Picture this – One Mom, two Girls with enough clothes and stuff for two weeks in the Bay. Add Christmas presents and various sundry purchases whilst visiting and the trip back could be a tight fitting disaster.
170 Litres of boot space is really not a lot.
Amidst dire predictions that a vast quantity of presents, toys and beach stuff would have to be left behind Carys was up to the challenge as she shoehorned stuff into every nook and cranny of her Opel Adam, banished the girls to the back and piled the front passenger seat and footwell with stuff, stuff and more stuff.
I suppose the boogie boards that were left behind don’t count as they never fit in the car the last trip either!
Travel safe ‘Wallets’!
We miss you already.
