Take it Back to the Beach

In just 24 hours 18 “hackers” from Nelson Mandela Bay devised the framework for a user-friendly app to promote and support tourism in the Metro.

They were participating in the second “hackathon” to be hosted by the Propella Business Incubator in Humerail.

Propella, in partnership with Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism, invited programmers to come together to develop a new app based on the NMBT website that can be used by the community in due course, which will provide a one-stop link to what there is to see and do on the Port Elizabeth beach-front, according to Ellen Fischat, Propella business support manager.

The 24 hour hackathon was fuelled by bottomless cups of coffee, pizza, chips and cold drink and programmers who broke up into teams to work on the app.

At the end a group was declared the ultimate hackers and they received R2000 in cash. The winning group was made up of Babalwa Boloti, Lincoln Gachaqua, Okuhle Ngada and Xabiso Hila which was the only team to have a female in it.

Take it Back to the Beach app will be available for download in due course. Progress will be reported on Propella’s Facebook page.
