Dear MyPE Warnings by the DA were realised last weekend when the road above the Maitlands River Mouth in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro (NMBM) collapsed and poses a serious danger to motorists as it continues to deteriorate. According to the MEC for Roads and Public Works, there is no funding available for repairs. I contacted the Department of Roads and Public works in February 2013 to warn them that the collapse of the road was imminent but no response was received despite numerous … [Read more...] about No funding for collapsing Maitlands road

Plight of Eastern Cape rural roads raised in NCOP
Dear MyPE I moved a motion without notice on Tuesday 4 November 2014 in a sitting of the National Council of Provinces that reads as follows: "No Regional Rural Road Maintenance Contracts have been awarded for the Province of the Eastern Cape in the 2014/15 financial year. Since April 2014 no maintenance work could be carried out in large parts of the Eastern Cape due to contracts not being awarded because of problems in the procurement process. Lack of action re-ignites Kirkwood violence
Dear MyPE Protestors are once again burning tyres and blocking roads in Kirkwood. The DA believes that this renewed violence has been sparked by a lack of action with regards to a thorough investigation into the irregular expenditure of R84.5 million by the Sunday's River Valley Municipality. What is the ANC trying to cover up – what are they trying to hide? More than 30 days have passed since protest action in the peaceful town of Kirkwood brought the town to a standstill in … [Read more...] about Lack of action re-ignites Kirkwood violence
R112m “World Cup Soccer” road fails Alicedale
Dear MyPE A 16km district road, which had been tarred at a cost of R112 million is in such a state of disrepair that residents have been putting up makeshift signs around the potholes and broken verges to warn motorists of the danger. A proper road network is the economic life blood of rural Eastern Cape towns that rely on tourism and … [Read more...] about R112m “World Cup Soccer” road fails Alicedale

Kirkwood Burns
Dear MyPE Residents from Kirkwood's Moses Mabhida township has laid siege to the town after R84.5 million was written off for irregular expenditure by the Sunday's River Valley Municipality. This is more than half of the municipality's annual budget of R150 million. People were barred from entering the town by the Public Order Policing unit (POPS) this morning. I was informed that municipal offices, the ANC offices, the fire station, fire-trucks as well as the garbage disposal truck had … [Read more...] about Kirkwood Burns
And then there was light
After a commitment made to the communities of the New Rest and Zwelidinga outside Seaview in Port Elizabeth, solar lights have finally been installed at both these informal settlements. In Consultation with community leadership, the community as a whole and myself in 2012, it was decided to request the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole to install solar street lighting in these areas. This was needed mainly for safety reasons as these areas are informal settlements and do not have formal access to … [Read more...] about And then there was light
