Getting down and dirty to clear stormwater drains
Blocking of stormwater drains in Nelson Mandela Bay will soon be a thing of the past, thanks to an Extended Public Works Programme driven project that will see more than 200 people employed to unblock and clean drains and catchpits in local areas. Do you stay or work in Humewood or South End? Then please stop using your crapper!
This afternoon was one of those great ones where lunch at The Chartroom Restaurant and a Fanta Brown on the deck was called for. But, this was not to be as I smelt a distinctly crappy smell coming from the harbour upon my arrival at the Yacht Club. Asking at the office I was informed that the smell had been wafting through PEDSAC, NSRI, the yacht club and beyond on and off since Thursday last week. Many complaints to Transnet had only resulted in frustration. Admittedly, even though Transnet … [Read more...] about Do you stay or work in Humewood or South End? Navigating a Storm over Water
The Property Poser experts are often inundated with queries about stormwater run-off from neighbouring properties and this week's scenario comes from a reader who lives in a sectional title complex. The reader explains that the area in which he lives was flooded some time ago, while he was abroad. At the time, his neighbour outside the complex knocked down the wall separating the two properties, which also happened to be the boundary wall of the complex. This was done to drain water from … [Read more...] about Navigating a Storm over Water
Neighbour’s runoff results in run-in
This week the Property Poser experts assist a reader whose neighbour's stormwater runs across his property. The reader does not indicate if the neighbour did anything to divert the water onto his property or whether it just appears to be the natural flow of the water. He would like to know what his neighbour's obligations are and whether the National Building Regulations and Standards Act is still in force. It is not difficult to see why this issue is becoming more and more problematic … [Read more...] about Neighbour’s runoff results in run-in
Redhouse River Contamination – We Never Learn
2012 is the third year in a row that the famous Redhouse River Mile will be held on the Sunday's River. For years now sailors, swimmers, rowers and other river users have been aware that they need to smear vaseline on or cover up any open sores before entering the river. I have personally seen sores on my legs take weeks to heal after sailing on the river. What is frustrating to residents and river users alike is that the outbursts of 'contamination' are unpredictable by nature and subject to … [Read more...] about Redhouse River Contamination – We Never Learn
Storm Brewing Over Runoff
With all the rain that has fallen across the country recently, it is not surprising to hear from a reader who complains about the manner in which his neighbour diverts stormwater runoff. He writes that his neighbour has made numerous holes in their shared boundary wall, diverting stormwater to the reader's side. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that the properties are on an incline, with the reader's erf being the lower of the two. The reader would like to know whether this practice … [Read more...] about Storm Brewing Over Runoff
Buffelsfontein Road Closed as Culvert Collapses
A big culvert (underground stormwater crossing the road) on Buffelsfontein Road collapsed this morning disrupting traffic. To prevent congestion and allow for road maintenance works to start immediately, the municipality will close the road at the Swift and 10th Avenue intersections. From the western side traffic will be redirected to Swift Road through to Sparrow Avenue and via 10 Avenue from the eastern side. Recent rains have put pressure on the storm water and electrical … [Read more...] about Buffelsfontein Road Closed as Culvert Collapses
