Retail trade sales slow in September

Retail trade sales slowed to 4.3% year-on-year in September, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) said on Wednesday. Market expectation was that retail trade sales would slow to 4.7%. In August, retail trade sales rose by 6.4%. According to Stats SA, general dealers contributed 1.9% while retailers in textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods were the main contributors to the 4.3% increase. South Africa's population has swelled from 40.5 million in 1996 to 51.7 million in 2011, results of Census 2011 have shown. "The Census results show that the population of South Africa increased by about four million from 1996 to 2001. In the ten years since the last census about seven million people have been added to the population," said Statistics South Africa of its Census 2011 results on Tuesday. CPI rises to 5.5% in September

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose to 5.5% in September, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) said on Wednesday. "Headline CPI (for all urban areas) annual inflation rate in September 2012 was 5.5%. This rate was 0.5% higher than the corresponding annual rate of 5% in August 2012," said Stats SA. Market expectation was that CPI would accelerate to 5.2% year on year. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in August rose to 5% in line with market expectation, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) said on Wednesday. "The headline CPI annual inflation rate in August 2012 was 5%. This rate was 0.1 of a percentage point higher than the corresponding annual rate of 4.9% in July 2012," said Stats SA. PPI slows to 5.4% in July

The Producer Price Index (PPI) slowed to 5.4% in July from 6.6% in June, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) said on Thursday. Stats SA said the lower PPI - which is the price of goods leaving factories and mines - could be attributed to decreases in the electricity price that decreased from 19.6% in June to 14.5% in July; while mining and quarrying decreased from 6.9% in June to 3.8% in July. GDP rises by 3.2% in second quarter

South Africa's real gross domestic product at market prices increased by 3.2% in the second quarter of 2012, up from 2.7% in the first quarter, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) said on Tuesday. April Retail Trade Sales Weaken

Retail trade sales weakened in April with the year-on-year rate falling to 1% compared to a revised 6.7% in March, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) said on Wednesday. Market expectation was that retail sales would show growth of 4.5%. Figures for April were boosted by the number of public holidays as well as additional school holidays after the Easter weekend, according to Stats SA. April PPI falls to 6.6%

The Producer Price Index (PPI) eased to 6.6% in April, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) said on Thursday. In March PPI, which is the price of goods leaving factories and mines, eased to 7.2%. Market consensus was that it would come in at 6.9%. Over the month, the PPI increased by 0.3%. Economists expect producer inflation to moderate further over the year as the base effect lessens and softer global demand contains the rise in prices of some commodities. GDP rises to 2.7% in first quarter of 2012

South Africa's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the first quarter of 2012 rose to 2.7%, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) reported today. "The seasonally adjusted real GDP at market prices for the first quarter of 2012 increased by an annualised rate of 2.7% compared with an increase of 3.2% during the fourth quarter of 2011," said Stats SA's executive manager of national accounts, Gerhardt Bouwer, on Tuesday. Eastern Cape Unemployment at 28.3%

On the back of an increase in South Africa's unemployment rate to 25.2% in the first quarter of 2012 compared to 23.9% in the fourth quarter of 2011, the East Cape unemployment rate is the second highest in the country at 28.3%, says Statistics South Africa (Stats SA).
