On Wednesday 28 December, the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) confirmed the death of three inmates on Monday at St. Albans Correctional Centre near Port Elizabeth, in the Eastern Cape. According to DCS Eastern Cape, it is alleged that at approximately 09h00, inmates at St. Albans Maximum Correctional Centre attacked officials with sharp objects. Reaction to PE Prison Riot
The IFP is extremely concerned about the increasing attacks on prison warders by inmates. The most recent attack happened in St Albans prison, near Port Elizabeth where three warders were stabbed and wounded by two inmates who attacked them with sharpened objects on Tuesday. The IFP has previously raised this problem with the Department of Correctional Services and will continue raising it until proper solutions have been submitted to parliament by the Department. Truck on Fire
At 12:50 pm today this Muncipal truck was on fire behind the North End Prison. Fortunately no injuries and the Fire Department were quickly on the scene. According to a bystander it appeared that the rear brakes were binding which caused the fire, but the exact reason is yet to be confirmed.
