Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant says implementing the National Minimum Wage by 1 May 2018 will not be possible. Briefing the media in Cape Town on Monday evening, the Minister said the delay was due to the fact that Parliament won’t be able to finalise the Bills aimed at implementing the new policy by that date. Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that the national minimum wage has been set at R20 per hour or R3500 per month for those that work a 40-hour week. Those who work a 45-hour week will have their minimum wage set at R3900. Domestic workers received an early Christmas present this year courtesy of the Minister of Labour. An increase in the minimum wages payable to domestic workers was announced by the Minister on 28 November which is effective as from 1 December 2011.
