EC government must intervene in Burgersdorp water crisis

28 October 2020 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE The residents of Burgersdorp are bearing the brunt of government inefficiencies, and in some cases spend up to ten days without running water, even though the local supply dam is at 80% of capacity. The cause of this suffering is the inability of the Joe Gqabi District Municipality to fulfil is water provision competency, and the Walter Sisulu Local Municipality’s lack of capacity to procure a transformer that would ensure the electricity supply to the local pump station. In … [Read more...] about EC government must intervene in Burgersdorp water crisis

EC Government must investigate Burgersdorp water project irregularities

27 August 2020 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE The water-scarce area of Burgersdorp is bearing the brunt of alleged irregularities surrounding a Joe Gqabi District Municipality water project relating to the repair of the Chaipini’s Klip Dam in Burgersdorp, after it breached in February 2020. The project has stalled for over three months, after the current contractor claimed the municipality has failed to pay for work done, despite there being no evidence of their appointment to do the work in the first place. (See pics here … [Read more...] about EC Government must investigate Burgersdorp water project irregularities

Untreated sewage threat to water safety in Burgersdorp

12 August 2019 By Port Elizabethan

Burgersdorp Raw Sewage

Dear MyPE An actively running sewage spill is putting the health and water safety of the residents of Burgersdorp and the Eastern Cape at risk. Recently I came across this sewage spill during an oversight inspection conducted at Mzamomhle in Burgersdorp. The spill is located close to the Ethembeni Senior Secondary School and learners and all local residents are therefore exposed to a massive health risk. The untreated sewage is flowing directly into the Stormberg River. This … [Read more...] about Untreated sewage threat to water safety in Burgersdorp

Communities outraged by the actions of the Demarcation Board

26 November 2015 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE Outraged community members of the newly merged Maletswai and Gariep Municipalities have come together to voice their concerns: firstly regarding the choice to merge these two failing municipalities to become one municipality (Eskom debt totalling a staggering R110 million), and secondly concerns over ward delimitation that has taken place. The Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) has clearly allowed the ANC to interfere in the demarcation process and allowed them to manipulate the … [Read more...] about Communities outraged by the actions of the Demarcation Board

Gariep misses AG deadline

1 September 2015 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE The Gariep municipality missed yesterday's Auditor-General's deadline for the submission of Annual Financial Statements and Annual Report after councillors received a late notice of the meeting, no supporting documents were available and a no-show of ANC councillors. The Special Council Meeting was vital to table the municipality's Annual Financial Statements and Annual Report and to submit them to the AG before the deadline of 31 August 2015, in terms of the Municipal Finance … [Read more...] about Gariep misses AG deadline

Historic statue defaced after municipality fails to erect fencing

2 June 2015 By Port Elizabethan

Burgersdorp Statue Defaced

Dear MyPE After numerous attempts by me to get permission to have the monuments in Burgersdorp fenced, the inevitable has happened – one of the monuments on the Town's Square was dressed in green paint during the early hours of the 2nd of June 2015. My plea with the municipality to have these monuments fenced was shot down by the Municipal Manager, Thembinkosi Mawonga. His response to my numerous attempts to address the issue led me seeking permission from Honourable Mayor, Ncedo Ngoqu, … [Read more...] about Historic statue defaced after municipality fails to erect fencing

Gariep crippled while Municipal Manager enjoys “Fat Cat” salary

18 September 2014 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE Gariep Local Municipality has been cash strapped for years and service delivery paralysed due to factors such as the Municipal Manager, Mr Thembinkosi Mawonga, who enjoys a salary of R1,38 million. Mr Mawonga resides in Bloemfontein, 250kms away. Due to this, his time at the local municipal office is almost non-existent, he seldom responds to emails and the Gariep community is severely disadvantaged as Mr Mawonga does not prioritise service delivery. In the adopted budget for … [Read more...] about Gariep crippled while Municipal Manager enjoys “Fat Cat” salary
