Political Parties May Not Manage Municipalities

31 January 2018 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE The Democratic Alliance is outraged at statements made by ANC Provincial Secretary, Lulama Ngcukayitobi, in the media today, wherein he suggests that certain Eastern Cape municipalities will be managed from Calata House. The municipalities affected are Walter Sisulu, Port St. Johns, Enoch Mgijima and Mnquma. Ngcukayitobi is quoted as saying “We have decided that, because of the chaos in some of these municipalities the (ANC) PEC must take over certain functions.” This is … [Read more...] about Political Parties May Not Manage Municipalities

DA on Land Reform

20 January 2018 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE The Democratic Alliance (DA) supports a comprehensive land reform programme, and this must be done in a responsible and orderly manner. The Constitution and legislation make provision for the restitution of land, as well as providing a process for ensuring that this is equitable to all concerned. The desire for land is understandable, but illegal invasions in various areas of the Buffalo City Metro (BCM) appear to be fueled by populist rhetoric from certain irresponsible … [Read more...] about DA on Land Reform

Tshwane, JHB and NMB pass first adjustment budgets

23 February 2017 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE The DA commends the governments of Tshwane, Johannesburg and Nelson Mandela Bay, who have today passed their mid-financial-year adjustment budgets. We specifically commend Tshwane for allocating R20 million to new community halls in Hammanskraal, Winterveld and Mabopane, JHB for committing R41 million more to electrify informal settlements left in the dark by the ANC, and NMB for adding R40 million to restore the water infrastructure left to ruin by the ANC causing the highest … [Read more...] about Tshwane, JHB and NMB pass first adjustment budgets

Dumping of rubbish at Buffalo City Coastal Municipal Offices

22 February 2016 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE The Democratic Alliance in Buffalo City notes the civic action by residents of Gonubie, who have piled two weeks of uncollected refuse outside the doors of the municipal offices in the seaside suburb. This is the culmination of months of unfulfilled promises on the part of the municipality, and, expresses the extreme disgust of all residents of Buffalo City at the filthy state of our metro. It has been reported that the next step will be to dump refuse at City Hall, and while … [Read more...] about Dumping of rubbish at Buffalo City Coastal Municipal Offices

Municipalities must not rob Peter to pay Paul

1 February 2016 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE Reports that the Eastern Cape has utilised its Water Intervention Grant to fund the financial mismanagement of four municipalities who were unable to pay their Eskom bills in December 2015 is further evidence of the complete lack of foresight and planning with regard to local government issues in this province. The ESKOM problem is one entirely of the municipalities' own making. Poor financial management and political infighting within the so-called ruling party have left these … [Read more...] about Municipalities must not rob Peter to pay Paul

Gariep Municipality suffering due to not meeting its financial obligations

26 January 2016 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE The Democratic Alliance is gravely concerned by the fact that Gariep Municipality, recently in the news for being on the verge of having its electricity supply cut off due to non-payment, is once again struggling to meet its financial obligations. It is alleged that the municipality intends utilising the Municipal Demarcation Transition Grant (the purpose of which is to fund the costs associated with the ill-advised merger with Maletswai Municipality after the 2016 Local … [Read more...] about Gariep Municipality suffering due to not meeting its financial obligations
