The Horse Memorial is a provincial heritage site in Port Elizabeth in memory of the horses that served and died during the Second Boer War. Municipality condemns the latest act of vandalism
Port Elizabeth - The Economic Freedom Fighters in Nelson Mandela Bay have claimed responsibility for vandalising another memorial statue in the area, this time dismantling the horse memorial in Port Elizabeth. EFF deputy chairperson for the Nelson Mandela Bay region, Bo Madwara, confirmed that the local chapter was behind the dismantling of the memorial. Stopped at the Horse Memorial this morning to view the destruction wrought by a bunch of 1/6th's yesterday afternoon. I wonder if these animals of destruction have paused to consider what Nelson Mandela might have said? Once photographed laughing in delight as his dog jumped up on him, Mandela's compassion extended to animals - he was a patron of the National Council of SPCAs, which works to improve the standards for animal welfare in communities in South Africa. At the risk of being labelled arrogant or pasted with any of the many 'ist labels allow me to express my knee jerk reaction to reports that 8 one sixths have gone and defaced Port Elizabeth's Horse Memorial: WTF? Why didn't the purported EFF vandals rather go and vandalise the statue of Queen Victoria? Is it because then Afrikaners would have sympathised!
