The ex-councillor (retired) that I spoke to this past weekend will be very happy to hear that the process of paying councillors’ once-off gratuity payments has begun. The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) has embarked on the process to pay the once-off gratuity to non-returning councillors based on the pensionable salary of each councillor. The department on Friday said 5 222 councillors did not return to their posts in municipal councils where they served in the local government term 2011-2016, post the 2016 Local Government Elections.
