The R75000 per day hole

Water is available via the Gariep Dam but payment delays and budget cuts on the implementation of Phase 3 of the Nooitgedacht Low Level Water Scheme Purification plant could scupper the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro receiving an additional 70 Million litres of water per day. The current water consumption in the metro is around 280 Million litres per day. This was revealed at an oversight visit today to Nooitgedacht hosted by Shadow Minister of Water and Sanitation, Leon Basson MP with Councillor … [Read more...] about Nooitgedacht Low Level Water Scheme’s Purification Capacity Problem

Gariep Municipality suffering due to not meeting its financial obligations

26 January 2016 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE The Democratic Alliance is gravely concerned by the fact that Gariep Municipality, recently in the news for being on the verge of having its electricity supply cut off due to non-payment, is once again struggling to meet its financial obligations. It is alleged that the municipality intends utilising the Municipal Demarcation Transition Grant (the purpose of which is to fund the costs associated with the ill-advised merger with Maletswai Municipality after the 2016 Local … [Read more...] about Gariep Municipality suffering due to not meeting its financial obligations

Gariep misses AG deadline

1 September 2015 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE The Gariep municipality missed yesterday's Auditor-General's deadline for the submission of Annual Financial Statements and Annual Report after councillors received a late notice of the meeting, no supporting documents were available and a no-show of ANC councillors. The Special Council Meeting was vital to table the municipality's Annual Financial Statements and Annual Report and to submit them to the AG before the deadline of 31 August 2015, in terms of the Municipal Finance … [Read more...] about Gariep misses AG deadline

Gariep crippled while Municipal Manager enjoys “Fat Cat” salary

18 September 2014 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE Gariep Local Municipality has been cash strapped for years and service delivery paralysed due to factors such as the Municipal Manager, Mr Thembinkosi Mawonga, who enjoys a salary of R1,38 million. Mr Mawonga resides in Bloemfontein, 250kms away. Due to this, his time at the local municipal office is almost non-existent, he seldom responds to emails and the Gariep community is severely disadvantaged as Mr Mawonga does not prioritise service delivery. In the adopted budget for … [Read more...] about Gariep crippled while Municipal Manager enjoys “Fat Cat” salary

DA shows excellent growth in Tsolwana by-election

18 September 2014 By Port Elizabethan

Letters to the Editor

Dear MyPE The DA showed excellent growth in yesterday's by-election in Ward 5 of the Tsolwana Municipality (Hofmeyr and Tarkastad).  A vacancy arose after the resignation of an independent councillor. Our candidate, Jomo Blom, won 810 votes (37.6%) against the ANC's 1 344 votes (62.4%).  The DA increased its support from 7% in the last local government elections to 37.6% and up from 31% in the general elections in May this year. This is an indication of the continuous growth and support … [Read more...] about DA shows excellent growth in Tsolwana by-election

DA seeks provincial takeover of bankrupt Gariep Municipality and Public Protector Intervention

9 September 2012 By Alan Straton

The local Sherriff again attached furniture and vehicles of the Gariep Municipality on Friday, 7 September after pension payments from employees that should have been paid over the SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) were not done. The chaos in this municipality continues despite a visit by the Premier, Noxolo Kiviet, to the area a week ago. With on-going weekly attachments of municipal assets it is clear this municipality is in in dire financial straits and needs urgent provincial … [Read more...] about DA seeks provincial takeover of bankrupt Gariep Municipality and Public Protector Intervention

Gariep Municipality Bounces Cheque Unable to Pay Staff

30 June 2011 By Alan Straton

The Gariep municipality in the Eastern Cape is unable to pay staff and councillors this month. This is symptomatic of the collapse of local government in the rural areas. There are other municipalities in the province experiencing the same problems.   On Wednesday 29 June an amount of R121 000 was paid to the Sheriff to avoid having municipal assets attached for debt owed. The money was owed to Umnga Farmers as a grant. This again is an indictment of the collapse of rural … [Read more...] about Gariep Municipality Bounces Cheque Unable to Pay Staff
