Contrary to what some say the EC DA does not support fracking

21 January 2014 By Port Elizabethan

Fracking continues to be a volatile and emotionally charged issue, particularly in the Eastern Cape where vast tracts of the Karoo have been earmarked for shale gas exploration. And much like key services such as health, education and housing, fracking looks set to be another critical issue that will be politicised in the run-up to the elections this year. As yet another political carrot being dangled in front of the economically disenfranchised rural electorate, the promise of energy and … [Read more...] about Contrary to what some say the EC DA does not support fracking

Losing the battle against fracking

12 September 2013 By Alan Straton

In a General Notice, published by the Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Bomo Edna Molewa, dated 23 August 2013, there is a clear indication that the state intends to allow exploration for the purposes of shale gas production. The process used to obtain shale gas is colloquially referred to as "fracking". The Minister has also reiterated in a press briefing in Pretoria, that these activities will be strictly controlled by the Department of Water and Environmental Affairs ("DWEA") to … [Read more...] about Losing the battle against fracking

Meet Anti Fracking Leaders Derek Light and Dougie Stern

20 September 2011 By Alan Straton

Shell are wanting to frack the Karoo for gas. What this means is that thousands of square kilometres of land in the Karoo will be littered with gas drills. These drills use millions of litres of water each time they are "fracked" and this is about the least off our worries. Thousands of litres of highly toxic chemicals are also pumped into each well and are pumped into the ground to a depth of about 5km. What does this mean to you or me? The gases which are emitted from the wells are highly … [Read more...] about Meet Anti Fracking Leaders Derek Light and Dougie Stern

29 March 2011 By Alan Straton

On Friday 25 March 2011, Cape Town Environmentalist and "human polar bear" Lewis Pugh took on the oil companies, including Dutch oil giant Shell, over their plan to prospect for shale gas in the Karoo using a controversial drilling method called hydraulic fracturing (fracking). See the video of Lewis Pugh's speech below: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvcvzTKEFd8 Some sound bites from Pugh's speech: Enshrined in our constitution is the right to a healthy environment Let us not … [Read more...] about Pugh Tells Shell to Frack Off (Nicely)

Fracking With Shell

4 March 2011 By Alan Straton

Oil giant Shell has detailed its plans to explore natural gas in the Karoo basin. The company has already applied to Petroleum Agency South Africa for exploration rights in the south-western Karoo basin to assess viable, unconventional gas resources. It has also appointed an independent consultancy to compile an environmental management programme (EMP). In a media session on Thursday, Shell vice president Bonang Mohale said the exploration activities would include geophysical studies and … [Read more...] about Fracking With Shell

Take Your Fracking and Frack Off

6 February 2011 By Alan Straton

As a Shell executive reading this please take note of the following thread of connectivity - much like the thread of underground connectivity that may destroy the Karoo as a result of your plans to proceed with hydraulic fracking: MyPE has been very vocal about the oil tanks in the Port Elizabeth Harbour, encouraging you to take your tanks and frack off. Your attempts to calm the local natives by taking them to lunch and spin doctoring the hell out of them were not succesful. The oil … [Read more...] about Take Your Fracking and Frack Off
