The preliminary 2017/18 Festive Season report indicates an 11% decline in fatalities on the roads when compared to the same period in the previous year. “Our preliminary festive season fatalities for the period starting 1 December 2017 to 9 January 2018 show that there were 1 527 people who died on the roads in that period compared to 1 714 fatalities in the same period the previous year,” Transport Minister Joe Maswanganyi said. A total of 845 fatalities have been recorded on South African roads since 1 December till 19 December, says Transport Minister Dipuo Peters. Easter fatalities down on 2015
The number of people who died on South Africa's roads during the Easter period has decreased by 46 percent, says Transport Minister Dipuo Peters. According to the preliminary Easter 2016 Road Safety Report, which was released by Minister Peters on Tuesday, there were 156 fatalities on the roads this year compared to 287 fatalities for the same period last year. East Cape festive season fatalities increase
Nearly 1 800 people died in accidents during the festive season, Transport Minister Dipuo Peters said on Tuesday. A total of 1 755 people lost their lives between December 1, 2015 and January 11 this year, she told reporters in Pretoria. This was an increase of 14% from last season's figures of 1 535, between December 1, 2014 and January 5, 2015. There were 1 387 fatal crashes this season, an increase of 11% from last year's 1 253.
