https://youtu.be/3LmB59-8hos When the Common Dolphins come close inshore of Algoa Bay to feed then Marine Conservation outfits get excited as it is an indication of the start of the Sardine Run. Along the way predators such as dolphins, sharks, gannets, penguins and whales feast on the sardines. Orca Killer Whales Port Elizabeth_4

It has been four years since Rainer and Silke Schimpf from Expert Tours in Port Elizabeth observed the disabled Orca, 'Sira', in Algoa Bay. At the time it appeared that Sira's family were assisting the Killer Whale with food and hunting on the Orca's behalf. See the www.MyPE.co.za report: Disabled Killer Whale With Missing Fins Survives. The May 2013 documenting of Sira being cared for by fellow pod members was at the time reported as one of the few times that killer whales have been seen … [Read more...] about Face to Face with a Killer as Disabled Orca Returns to Port Elizabeth

PE’s Bottlenose Dolphins chase Great White Shark [Video]

26 October 2016 By Alan Straton

It looks like Algoa Bay's Bottlenose Dolphins finally got the memo that there are more than just a few of them in the bay. Whilst drone filming along a beach break in Port Elizabeth, Rainer Schimpf from Expert Tours followed some Bottlenose Dolphins and to his surprise saw a Great White Shark in the surf as well. When viewing the drone footage you will see adult Bottlenose Dolphins (Adults can be up to 3.5 meters in length) chasing a Great White Shark (estimated at 5 meters in length) … [Read more...] about PE’s Bottlenose Dolphins chase Great White Shark [Video]

Baratz Wreck – now an Environmental Disaster for Algoa Bay

7 January 2016 By Alan Straton

Baratz Stern

Reports flowing in now indicate that tons of diesel on-board the sunken crayfishing boat, the Baratz, is now escaping into the sea at a far greater rate than ever before. Yesterday at around 10:00 am the wreck area was approached by a dive tour boat from Expert Tours and owner Rainer Schimpf remarked to MyPE later that day that; "... the smell of diesel and extent of it on the surface was far greater than on previous encounters and more than one nautical mile from the wreck." At 14h00, … [Read more...] about Baratz Wreck – now an Environmental Disaster for Algoa Bay

Dolphins race duck to bait ball

14 April 2015 By Alan Straton

Commons Dolphin

On Sunday 12 April at around 06h30 we launched with Expert Tours from the Noordhoek Ski Boat Club in a heavy sea mist and motored slowly south-east for around 5 kilometres – just free of the Noordhoek headland and directly into the path of any Dolphins that may be making their way towards Bird Island or along the coast with the sardines to feast on their required 15 to 25 kilograms of nutrition a day. With the mist all around and no landmarks to be seen the sense of being alone is … [Read more...] about Dolphins race duck to bait ball

Sperm Whale Tail

This past Sunday, the Longhair and I received an invite to go and look for Dolphins and a Sardine Run Bait Ball (or two or three) in Algoa Bay. We met Rainer and Silke from Expert Tours at the entrance to the Noordhoek Ski Boat Club at 6:30 am - one of the parties was on time, but we will not say which one! Accompanying Rainer and Silke was Manfred - a retired armaments expert from Germany. The Noordhoek Ski Boat Club is experiencing explosive growth in membership lately (Yes, those 'boat … [Read more...] about Expertly guided to Dolphins
