Trade deficit widens to R21.2bn

South Africa recorded a trade deficit of R21.2 billion in October, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) said on Friday. "The R21.2 billion deficit for October 2012 was due to an increase in exports of 7.8% and an increase in imports of 16.7%. Exports increased by R4.4 billion (7.8%) and imports increased by R11.8 billion (16.7%)," said the revenue service. Current account deficit headed in the wrong direction

South Africa's current account deficit widened further to 4.9% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the first quarter of 2012, said the Reserve Bank on Thursday. "The deficit on the current account of the balance of payments widened from 3.6% of gross domestic product in the fourth quarter of 2011 to 4.9% in the first quarter of 2012," said the central bank in its June Quarterly Bulletin. Narrowing in fourth quarter deficit

South Africa's current account deficit narrowed to 3.6% of GDP in the fourth quarter of 2011, said the Reserve Bank. "Relative to the country's gross domestic product, the deficit on the current account decreased from 4.1% in the third quarter of 2011 to 3.6% in the fourth quarter," said the bank when it released its March Quarterly Bulletin on Monday. Current Account Deficit Widens

South Africa's current account deficit widened to 3.3% of gross domestic product, the Reserve Bank said on Tuesday. According to the bank's September Quarterly Bulletin, the deficit in the second quarter widened to 3.3% from 3.1% in the first quarter.  Analysts had forecasted 3.2%.
