Summer is the season for yachts to pass through the Port of Port Elizabeth as they follow the trades on circumnavigations or long distance voyages. A constant stream of foreign chatter is heard at the Algoa Bay Yacht Club (ABYC) as these interpid sailors overnight or spend weeks in the marina whilst going off and exploring the tourist opportunities, doing essential maintenance and victualling their craft ahead of the next leg to the next destination. This afternoon we were treated to a guided tour of the MSC Opera, docked in Port Elizabeth for the day whilst she voyages from Cape Town to Durban. This floating 'townhouse complex' accommodates 2 199 passengers in 856 cabins and is 251.25 metres long - a whole lot longer than the boat the Longhair and I sailed to Rio de Janeiro on in the 2000 Cape to Rio yacht race.
