DHL Stormers 19 (6), Southern Kings 11 (3)

3 June 2013 By Alan Straton

The DHL Stormers ended any talk or speculation about relegation from Vodacom Super Rugby by beating the Southern Kings 19-11 at a drenched Newlands on Saturday. The game was fairly close on the scoreboard for most of the way, but then it was always going to be on a sodden field after long periods of torrential downpours earlier in the day. What was required to win was a strong tight-phase platform and a good kicking game, and that was what the Stormers provided. They drove strongly in … [Read more...] about DHL Stormers 19 (6), Southern Kings 11 (3)

The Cape Town trip

2 April 2012 By Port Elizabethan

The "boss" and I had to take a trip to the Mother City to visit the Uncle Sam consulate for visa reasons. So we decided to make a weekend of it. On the Friday morning at approximately 07h00 we hopped into the brand new Hyundai and tootled off down the Garden route. It was going to be a slow, stop here, stop there trip as we only needed to be in Somerset West at 06h00, giving us 11 hours to get there. First stop Storms River and coffee. It had rained most of the way so the caffeine was … [Read more...] about The Cape Town trip

PE can Emulate and Better Cape Town

16 April 2011 By Alan Straton

Dear Editor Recently, my family and I traveled to Cape Town for a holiday. We were met by a fantastic 1st world experience. On arrival I felt that the Squatter camps could do with some formal housing, but then after chatting to some locals I found out that there has been a terrific influx of foreigners and the housing department finds it a challenge to keep up. The organised housing that I saw looked great, but I do understand the challenge. My first observation is that everything is just … [Read more...] about PE can Emulate and Better Cape Town

Chuene Tackles Table Mountain and Wins

3 March 2011 By Alan Straton

Nelson Mandela Bay is the only Metropolitan area outside the Western Cape which has given its support to Cape Town's tourism authorities' bid to get Table Mountain voted as one of the world's Official New7Wonders of Nature. This follows Titus Chuene's, marketing manager of Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism (NMBT), recent call to the city's residents to support Cape Town Tourism and vote for Table Mountain. As a result, Cape Town Tourism has named Chuene as an official ambassador of their Table … [Read more...] about Chuene Tackles Table Mountain and Wins

PE Singer to Sing Brenda at CT Gay Pride

2 March 2011 By Alan Straton

If there is one singer in South Africa capable of doing justice to a Brenda Fassie song, it's Kwazakhele, Port Elizabeth born singer and songwriter, Nomfusi. The singer, now based in Cape Town and soon off to Canada to perform at the Montreal Jazz Festival, says "Brenda is a legend. She had a brilliant voice, and that 'X-factor' which so many new singers lack. She was very outspoken, I can relate to that." Nomfusi and her full six-piece band, The Lucky Charms, will be doing a tribute to … [Read more...] about PE Singer to Sing Brenda at CT Gay Pride

How Can I Vote for an Illusion?

18 February 2011 By Alan Straton

We have family down in 'Slaapstad' that assure us that Table Mountain does exist. We remain unconvinced however as whenever we visit it is either raining heavily or there are storm clouds in the direction of this so-called Table Mountain. Every now and then the rain will lift and the clouds clear and we will get a glance at what looks like an illusion to us. I recall walking up a steep hill once and, when we got to the top, it didn't look like a Table at all - just some rocks, a couple of … [Read more...] about How Can I Vote for an Illusion?

India Are One Up Before the Port Elizabeth Clash

19 January 2011 By Alan Straton

India held their mettle in a nail-biting contest at Sahara Park Newlands to beat South Africa by two wickets in the third one-day international. India took the lead with their second win in the five-match series by reaching 223 with ten balls to spare. Yusuf Pathan (59 off 50 balls) came to India's rescue after their top order collapsed for less than 100 runs. Pathan showed JP Duminy and Johan Botha no mercy when he went on a 59 runs off 50 balls rampage. The Indian batsmen had luck … [Read more...] about India Are One Up Before the Port Elizabeth Clash

Proteas Carry the Choker Tag (Again)

17 January 2011 By Alan Straton

Colin Ingram

South African cricket team, the Proteas,  will head to Newlands for the third one-day international against India probably still shell shocked but more determined to get on track after last Saturday's miserable defeat. ( I was so convinced of a Proteas win that I stopped watching - a salutary lesson with regards to fat ladies and singing I can tell you!). Plenty of fiery accusations that the Proteas choked again are still doing the rounds on sports forums. Fans were disgruntled with … [Read more...] about Proteas Carry the Choker Tag (Again)
